San Francisco's "South of Market Area" how sketchy is it?

Travel Info
Thinking of relocating and I've heard mixed views on the area. How bad is it really?

Travel Tips
The reason you keep on getting mixed opinions is because both positive and negative views of SoMa are correct.

SoMa is to San Francisco what SoHo is to Manhattan. It's a very, very mixed neighborhood...where extreme wealth co-exists with extreme poverty.

At one end of it, you have Rincon Hill, Mission Bay, and the area around Moscone Center. These are all parts of SoMa that are either in the process of gentrifying or have already done so. An apartment in one of the new Rincon Hill highrises will set you back at least a million dollars. The streets around Moscone Center now has swanky hotels, museums, and a Bloomingdales. Mission Bay is where the Giants play ball and UCSF is building a new medical center.

At the other end of the spectrum, you have 6th Street, Folsom, and that entire strip of land along I-80. These are very seedy streets... where the converted warehouses have been turned into nightclubs, SROs, and marijuana dispensaries. Lots of prostitutes, drug dealers, bouncers, and SFPD.

And all of this is contained in one urban neighborhood. That's part of the fun. It's vibrant. But, at the same time, it comes with a degree of risk you wouldn't get with "old money" neighborhoods like Pacific Heights.
Others
It's not ideal for family living but it can be a whole lotta fun for vibrant and adventurous singles who relish urban lifestyles.
It's funky and urban, not family-friendly. Parking is a nightmare. There are a few sections to be careful of, especially 6th Street. But every neighborhood has its "sketchy" area in SF--OK, maybe not Pacific Heights...
Yeah, its really bad. Let's see, homeless and prostitues sleeping on the streets, begging, pissing right in front of your door step, dumping their crap, selling/buying/doing drugs.

People might not see all these going on during the day time or a lot of people refuse to look around because all they want to do is get the heck out of South of Market ASAP when they pass by, but the real San Franciscans will tell you the truth about South of Market.

If you really want to live on Market street, you might want to check out Castro District. Its on Market Street, but its way South and its the real happening place. That's of course if you don't might the gay/lesbian community.

Good luck to you.
