Where is the best place to view/visit the San Andreas Fault around San Franscisco? |
Travel Info Where is the best place to view/visit the San Andreas Fault around San Franscisco? Travel Tips Point Reyes north of San Francisco has an earthquake trail right near their visitors center. The visitors center also has a seismogram in the lobby. That whole area is the fault, and part of it is covered in water.. Point Reyes National Seashore is absolutely beautiful...You can drive out to the lighthouse and maybe see a few lone whales migrating north for the season. Also, if you eat meat, you need to get a Lunny Ranch chicken sausage sandwich from The Cafe at Drakes Beach. http://www.nps.gov/pore/ Others If you drive along 280 at Crystal Springs Reservoir, the fault runs right through it. If you drive up Page Mill Road from Palo Alto, the main trace of the San Andreas fault is noticeable as an abrupt dip in the road just before you start up ``three grunt hill'', a short steep stretch of road just downhill from Monte Bello Open Space Preserve on the left (West) and Los Trancos Open Space Preserve on the right (East). At the entrance to both of these preserves there are free trail guides that point out features associated with the fault: sag ponds, push-up ridges, long straight valleys, fences offset in 1906, etc. In particular, just inside Monte Bello Open Space Preserve note the long skinny cattail pond next to the trail up Black Mountain. http://sepwww.stanford.edu/oldsep/joe/fa... |
