What are the best family neighborhoods in San Francisco? |
Travel Info Am moving to San Francisco with my wife and 1 year old daughter. Any advice on neighborhoods? Travel Tips In the city, I'd avoid SOMA, Tenderloin/Civic Center, Mission District, Potrero Hill, Bayview/Hunter's Point, Excelsior, Portola, North of Panhandle, and Fillmore. The rest of the neighborhoods are fine. There are many young families in Noe Valley, Hayes Valley, West Portal, Park Merced, and Inner Sunset, if you want to join the pack. Here's an excellent map (including transit): http://transit.511.org/providers/maps/sf... Otherwise, it's off to the suburbs. It's a very good idea to stay close to the rail lines though. The freeways can become horridly packed during rush hour. If you look at the BART map, the Yellow Line beyond Rockridge is soccer mom territory. The two branches of the Blue Line includes very nice areas as well. Anything along the Caltrain Line is mostly good (except for 22nd and Bayshore, which are seedy). Millbrae is the intermodal transfer station between the two systems, and is basically perfect if you're looking for convenience. http://www.bart.gov/stations/map/systemm... http://www.caltrain.com/caltrain_map.htm... Others I grew up in SF, have worked there for the past 35 years, 25 of them as a Paramedic. Use this rule of thumb: Absolutely stay to the North, West and Southwest residential districts of SF....nearly all "other" districts of SF are just plain dangerous. I recommend the Richmond, Sunset, Ingleside, Parkmerced or Marina Districts. There are places such as Pacific Heights or St. Francis Woods or The Seacliff or areas bordering The Presidio, but you will need to bring ..oh, about....5 or 10 or more million $ to live there. Bummer. If your job is in San Francisco, you will get more bang for your buck if you live in the eastbay some where along the Bart line like San Leandro, Union City or Fremont. There are many nice family friendly neighborhoods, but I'd pick West Portal. Great beach access, a great quiet neighborhood, and superior public transportation. To me, there are not too many safe neighborhoods in SF. The Sunset or West Portal districts would probably be the safest. I would recommend suburbs close to SF instead. Millbrae (5 mins from SFO) is great if you have a little one. Safe, good weather, great schools. Easy commute with Bart or Cal train. |
