What would you recommend doing and trying in San Francisco? |
Travel Info I'm going to San Francisco and I'm just wondering when people here would recommend doing and trying. What are the best attractions? Where is the best food? I especially love food, so if you can just answer on that, feel free. Thanks so much in advance. Travel Tips The best food is slightly off the beaten path. If you really like seafood, skip the touristy Fisherman's Wharf, and go to Swans on Polk street! No glamor, amazing food. If you like Mexican: Rosavelt's Tamale Parlor on 24th. Dim Sum almost anywhere in China Town is a winner. I always take guests for a long walk though Golden Gate Park. And across the bay, in Berkeley, is Tilden Park, which has amazing hikes. I hate the Folsom Fair-- it's enough to make me want to be straight. But if you like seeking old men with chicken butts wearing leather chaps, walking around on leashes, then that's the place to be! Castro is OK--- you need to do it, but don't spend your whole trip there. Others Seafood down in Fisherman's Wharf. Good Italian restaurants around Nob Hill. Chinatown (obviously) for excellent Chinese food. Ghiradelli Square for chocolate. There are plenty of attractions to see and do, so a lot depends on what your interests are and also how long you have in SF and how active you are - SF is very very hilly. I walked a lot but there are plenty of tours - the various bus companies run City Tours (which go to all the main sites) plus they run trips out to Muir Woods & Sausilito (very pretty), to the wine valleys (great if you're old enough to drink) and down to Carmel & Monterey (my least favourite of the trips that I did, but OK). Also take a cruise in the Bay, perhaps visiting Alcatraz and climb up to Coit Tower. First of all San Francisco is a gay mecca, so anything gay is there from mild to wild. If you like wile, you can't miss the Folsom Street Fair. The Golden Gate Bridge, which in the 1930's when its construction was completed had over 2,000 lawsuits filed to stop its construction. People thought it would ruin the landscape. Ha!, well the bridge proved them wrong, didn't it? Taking the tour of how it was built, etc and just seeing all of its engineering beauty and magnificence is an experience in and of itself. There's tons of hiking, ferry restaurants, some of the best restaurants in the country, if not the world and diverse cultures galore. San Francisco is a clickish, but more tolerant society of sexual attitudes and free thinkers. Don't forget the museums, etc.. Leave your rental car at airport agency. You won't need it. San Francisco has great reputation. I wish I had grown up there instead of stinky smelly, overcrowded and polluted Los Angeles my best friend lives there. we really just went downtown and wandered from place to place and it was one of the best weeks of my life. Try Jon Barlycorns , I got hammered like noones buissness there Depends on your likes and tastes. I can go on about attractions and restaurants here in SF. My husband grew up here and he loves to give tours to all our friends and relatives who visit. But alas, time is not available to me now. I will leave you with SFGate's top 100 restaurants, and bargain bites. I will drop by again later. http://sfgate.com/food/top100/2007/... http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/listings/b... http://www.grubgirl.com/index.php?p=34... Best food value and most fun. It's in Civic Center area: also in area are main library, Asian Art Museum, City Hall. The Calif. Culinary Academy buffet lunch on Thursdays (I believe--please call school to verify). Call at least a several days ahead to reserve, then show up around 11:30 AM to be one of the first in the door (and also for a good food selection. http://www.yelp.com/biz/ubcrdoy13wjxzq3r... Chinese buffet: This is where many people in the city dept. next door often hold their parties. Lots of food and I like it here. All you can eat, and it is reasonable. Also in the Civic Center area (it's on corner Market St. & 8th St.) Good experiences: Cable car ride from Powell St. & Market to Fisherman's Wharf Ferry Building for coffee, snack, good bread, browse good cookware store. Asian Art Museum\ the funky and huge Amoeba Records store on Haight near Stanyon in the Haight Ashbury if you like to browse for music cd's, old movies, etc. |
