Wow, it's so nice to see you looking to sight see in Oakland; it's a lovely city and is often overlooked.
I suggest going to Lake Merritt, the Oakland Museum of California, and the Oakland Zoo up in the hills. Downtown is also very cool, and there is a small Chinatown area also. If you have small children, the Fairyland near Lake Merritt is not to be missed.

Don't forget to go to Jack London Square too, maybe at the end of your day to eat in one of the restaurants there and walk along the water. Enjoy your trip!

I don't go there often, it really isn't all that touristy.

Try http://www.chabotspace.org/ The Chabot Space & Science Center is pretty interesting.

If you are into archery they have a beautiful archery park right there by the parking lot.

I could also spend all day at Tilden Park http://www.ebparks.org/parks/tilden.htm... There is a ton to do and the hiking offers many great views.
If you have a car, I would suggest a trip to Berkeley, just up the freeway from Oakland, as well. You could tour the Scharffen Berger Chocolate factory on Heinz Avenue [reservations required--(510) 981-4050]; visit Aquatic Park on Bolivar Drive which features "Dream Land for Kids," a playground full of castles, bridges, swings and slides, as well as water activities including canoeing and motorboating; see the Berkeley Rose Garden, Bayview Place at Euclid Ave; try your luck (with horse racing) at Golden Gate Fields; meander the extensive pathways and enclosed greenhouses at the University of California Botanical Garden on Centennial Drive; explore Tilden Park's steam trains, merry-go-round, botanic garden, sandy lakeside beach, golf couse and hiking trails; join a guided tour of the University of CA Berkeley campus; or stroll the charming 4th Street shops and stop in for a fabulous breakfast at Betty's Oceanview Diner.
