Travel Tips
Gotta jump on the bandwagon on this one also, despite some great answers already such as Alli's. BD D, you must have caught a bad day. It is because of the ever present "fog machine" that SF DOES NOT have a bad smog problem. In SF, the air-conditioner is nearly always on....the rule is basically 3 roasting hot days in a row (rare anyway) is all you get, and then you can be assured the fog is rolling in. Someone mentioned September, and they are right. "Indian Summer" in SF and the surrounding Bay Area is beyond nice....if the weather in SF was like it is in September year round, I think the whole world would want to live here. August can be a gamble, but here's a "secret". All you have to do if SF is foggy is cross the GG Bridge to find sun (North, to Marin}. It is not at all unusual to cross 1/2 the GG Bridge, and BAM!...the fog lifts and the temp picks up an instant 20 degrees. Heres' another great sight on some days, not infrequent. To be atop Mt. Tam in Marin and sitting in 90 or 100 degree sun, with the entire area beneath you nothing but a grey blanket of fog, covering all there is to see. It is a fantastic sight.

it depends. search it up on a climate site miss :)
Actually, it's smoggy. There is a lot of air pollution and there is green-brown air lingering around there.
You should be fine in August. Fog is usually early morning and mostly right on the coast line.
Any chance that you can hold off on that trip until September? That's usually when the weather is actually sunny and rather balmy through out the day. September is a better time to go because there aren't as many tourists as well. San Francisco is usually foggy from June until August and it can get down to forty-five degrees at night. If you go across the Golden Gate bridge to Marin it is usually about sixty degrees. Keep that in mind if you want to get out of the city for a bit. If you are going in August, be sure to pack at least some warm clothing because you will need it.

BTW, BDD part of my family lived in SF for years and I do not recall smog (been visiting for ten years). If you really want smog go hang out at LAX for a day.
True, there can be smog but it's not as bad as BDD makes it out to be. The sea breaze, fog, and light rains help clear the sky of smog. Most of the smog will be in the East Bay. I have spent a lot of time in SF and can tell you that you should expect cool weather any time of the year. though July and august are generally warmer, the mornings and late afternoons can still be cool and foggy and you may even get rain. Early to mid Fall is a great time to be in SF, temps are mild and the sky is generally clear. However SF is a great city to visit any time. Have a wonderful in my favorite city.
The smog is not that bad, certainly not green!

It will be cooler then you will be expecting, it is best to bring a jacket. I seem to always end up buying a sweatshirt while there.

The fog stays off the ground, you don't need to worry about visability.

The when is nights until about noon, where is not guessable, as it tends to be everywhere if there isn't a breeze.
