To note: any place near union square will be expensive. On the top of Macy*s is The Cheesecake Factory. The food is usually very good. However they do not take reservations and the wait can be very long sometimes.
Just a few blocks away from Union Square is San Francisco's Westfield Shopping Centre & SF Shopping Centre {On Market St & Powell}. It's huge! Plus the basement (of the building with Bloomingdales) is a massive foodcourt with a great varity and pretty good food.

I enjoyed Bistro 69 located at (oddly enough) 69 Maiden Lane by Union Square in San Francisco. It offers outdoor cafe seating. The food is a nice mix of Mediterranean and Italian dishes as well as specialty sandwiches.

Yes, Union Square, Castro St., Haight Street, Pier 39 and Metreon are cool places to shop and eat. Don't forget to go to Ghiradellie Square to pick up some yummy, yummy chocolate! :)
