San Francisco's gay population?

Travel Info
I know San Fran is famous for its gay open culture. I 'm visiting for the first time in a month and wanted to know some best night clubs and bars to visit to get a sense of the culture. Any suggestions? Bart accessibility a plus.

Travel Tips
Transfer to MUNI (it's short for Municipal Railway) lines T, K, L, or M from any of the following BART stations:

- Embarcadero
- Montgomery Street
- Powell Street
- Civic Center / United Nations Plaza
- Balboa Park

Get off the train at either Castro Street or Church Street. You'll be right in the heart of the gay village. By far the most popular bars are Badlands, Midnight Sun, and The Cafe. However, Harvey's is the most tourist friendly. There's also a great walking tour for straight tourists who feel uncomfortable exploring the neighborhood on their own:

As for nightclubs, the best ones are in SOMA, not the gay village. These include Ruby Skye, Mezzanine, Mighty, 1015 Folsom, DNA Lounge, and The Endup.

And while San Francisco is the second most expensive city in America, the nightclubs apparently didn't get the memo. You'll suffer dearly at restaurants, hotels, gas stations, tour desks, and theatres...but you can go clubbing here for beans. Covers are low, drinks are reasonable, and the bouncers are usually laid-back compared to their counterparts in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Las Vegas.

That's the great thing about San Francisco...you can have a good time without worrying about being rejected because your shirt isn't worth $500.00.
Others
The center of gay culture is Castro Street. It has its own stop on Muni - take the Bart to Embarcadero and then walk upstairs to the Embarcadero Muni station (it's a different system - you'll have to pay again). It's like five stops to Castro.

What exactly to do depends on what you're into. There are restaurants, bars, clubs, whatever. Pick up a copy of the Bay Guardian (free in corner kiosks) and look at the listings.
I'm unsure if you want to go the gay district but if you do, go to Castro Street. It's the gay community and it's awesome. You don't want to take the bart bc the bart takes you around the bay area (inside and outside of sf) but take the bus (sf muni). The underground (a bus which runs underground, sort of like the bart but only stays within sf), which is located right by the bart is a very easy commute. It can take you to the castro district to downtown sf within minutes! Also check out haight street. It's a cool place. Hmmm...where else. There is an ice cream shop that the food network noted as one of the best ice cream shop in america. I can't remember where it's at but if you looked it up on the food network website, you'll be able to find it. But fyi, there really isn't anything to do around the ice cream shop. No place to even sit once you get your ice cream. But it's great! Also go to Lombard street. It's the most crooked street in the world and it's beyond beautiful! Belive me...beautiful! I don't go clubbing or to the bars much, so I won't be able to tell you about those but if you go to the North beach area, you'll find a lot of bars. It's really nice there as well. Have fun! I love SF!!! Oh, if you're in the mood for some shopping, downtown sf...best shopping ever!!!
The Castro has the highest concentartion of gay bars and clubs.
The leather/bear bars are in the SoMa area: The Eagle at 12th & Harrison and Powerhouse at Folsom & Dore are must sees.
I'm sure the gay people there are not thrilled with the idea of being a tourist attraction for you. I know I'm not interested in being one. There is not really any specific place to see us just look around I am sure there are gay people in your area as well.
