What's the deal with San Fran people?

Travel Info
Why are they so quick to tell everyone just how tolerant, diverse, open-minded, forward-thinking, and intelligent they are? I've met tons of people from the Bay Area that say exactly the same thing about how tolerant EVERYONE is and how wonderful it is to be in an open-minded place, unlike the rest of America. Is tolerance really defined by whether or not people enjoy seeing a dominatrix spank a homosexual man in assless chaps on a Tuesday afternoon in downtown San Fran? And of the city is so diverse, why does it seem like everyone you run into in the city is either homosexual, asian, or an abortion doctor? Are there any black people at all in SF? Any straight people with children? It seems like people from SF constantly talk about tolerance and diversity to reassure themselves that this is really true. Any truth to that theory? And, why does it seem like 95% of people in SF believe they are part of some sort of revolution? What's up with that?

This is a great question b/c it's somewhat true. I was born and raised in the Bay Area and love it and love going out to SF but I agree with what you say about the people there. San Francisco and Berekly are in their own little worlds and don't necessarily reflect the rest of the Bay Area. Most people in the Bay Area are down to to earth, laid back, and not too judgemental and don't feel the need to throw their values and views in your face. SF just attracts all the weirdos, super liberals, psuedo-intellectuals, pretentious snobs, and so forth. It's amazing for a city that talks about diversity and tolerance how it has one of the least diverse electorates and do not tolerate people with conservative or even moderate views. I am not conservative but kind of middle of the road, generally vote democrat, and I get a lot of crap from people in SF calling me conservative. If you don't think like they do and agree with them they will call you ignorant, narrow minded, unaware, and uneducated. It's such hypocrisy and double standards in that city. DIVERSITY also means diverse points of views, values, and opinions which is something SF severly lacks. The city is mainly white and asian with some blacks and latinos. Sacramento is more racially diverse than SF. And some people in SF just feed of each other's self righteousness. They surround themselves with people that think just like them so they get some false sense that they are right and the other side is wrong. The city is just way tooo liberal and doesn't value or listen to other opinions not on the far left. There is nothing wrong with being liberal or liberal values but SF just takes it too far. I hate extremme right wingers just as much as extremem left wingers.

If people in that city were really tolerant then they wouldn't protest anything and everything they don't agree with. If you are tolerant then let people believe what they want and worry about your own life, which many people there don't do, they are always trying to convince you with their point of view. And if they were open minded they would LISTEN and LEARN from people with DIVERSE and DIFFERENT views and values from their own, which they do not do. Some people in SF are just so smug and full of themselves, they always need to remind themselves they are smarter and better than the rest of the country. ANd the funny thing is when someone from SF tries to defend that city they end up just being a classic example of what you are talking about. I accidently came across this blog one day and it's probably one of the best descriptions of that city, you should check it out b/c it's filled with people that feel like you:

SF is a great city overall, it's so beautiful, amazing architecture, and natural scenery, ect.. BUT it's the people that the city attracts that ruin it. Why does everyone have to be liberal and think the same? I like living around people that all dont think the same b/c then you can see other's people's views and values and understand where they are coming from whether you agree with them or not. Open minded means learning to listen and understand other people's values and many times agree to disagree about things. Liberalism, diversity, tolerance, and open mindedness mean different things to the people in SF. It's sad too b/c they ruin that great city. I always love going out to the city but probably won't ever live there b/c the people are so full of themselves, the East Bay has the best most down to earth and REAL people in the BAy Area.

thats one city i wish would just break off and go into the ocean - its an embarrassment to this nation
Ha ha! I'm from San Francisco, and you bring up a good point- they talk about diversity, but it's a certain KIND of diversity- yea, doesn't diversity include white people? And straight people? If you want to see worse, go into any SF governmental facility- with an emphasis on the "mental" part.

And Kristin, I love how anyone who doesn't agree with you is "ignorant". If we were all educated, we would think exactly like you, right? Another thing, the people that live in this city are not 'amazing"- they are about as boring as it gets with problems relating that are so serious that they have come to define themselves ONLY by their differences. OK, if you're gay, you're gay- WHAT ELSE??? What else about you? How is being black, gay, or in a wheelchair "amazing" all by itself? Give me a break.
wow. you sure are ignorant. but that's an overstatement for you. I'm not going to waste my breath because as a Franciscan i love my town and i love it's diversity oh and i happen to be black (bet that's a real shocker for you) don't let your ignorance hinder the big picture. it's a beautiful city filled with beautiful people whether they be GAY,
STRAIGHT,
BISEXUAL,
BLACK,
WHITE,
ASIAN,
HISPANIC,
OR INDIAN.
they're all amazing individuals who make this city great. so please refrain from making generalizations when you obviously don't know what your talking about.
i hate ignorant people. i'm glad i live in san fransico.
Umm, why not take a look for yourself? I used to live there for 7 years and it's a city like no other. The sex thing seems to have you vexed a bit, it seems. I wish everyone was as in touch with 'it' as San Franciscans are. A place that is still so cutting edge after all these decades just makes you feel a bit like a 'revolutionary', especially, when you see what other places are like.
Hey, Matt, what happened to you? You went to SF and couldn't get laid? Well, maybe you were just too uptight for them.

Personally, as a Brit, I love visiting San Francisco - it's fun, relaxing and friendly, with some great restaurants. And last time I noticed, there seemed to be plenty of black people around - or maybe they were all out-of-town visitors? The spanking thing sounds fun to watch, though - does it only happen on Tuesdays?
