Where did all these parrots come from? |
Travel Info Are they native to SF or escaped pets or what? Can you take one and keep it for a pet if you want to or is that illegal? Travel Tips They are escaped pets. Apparently, they thrive in SF, probably because so many people try to catch them and use food as bait... You can try to catch one. It's not illegal. At least it wasn't when I tried... Source(s): I really wanted that damn bird... Other Travel Tips They are probably illegal. Parrots are not native born here [unless one has babies here]. Take one to a vet in you see one. Why would parrots be flying around San Franciso?? The original flock all had leg bands, so it's believed they were pets/caged somewhere, and escaped en masse. All the others are descendants of that original flock. It's litigious San Francisco. There's a law for everything... SFMC, Article 7, Section 485. TRAPPING OR KILLING OF BIRDS PROHIBITED; EXCEPTION. (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to trap, capture, kill or otherwise destroy any wild bird within the City and County of San Francisco, except that pigeons and other wild birds which become a nuisance or a hazard to public health may be trapped or captured, in a humane manner, by, or with the permission of, the Director of Public Health. (b) It shall be the duty of the person who traps or captures pigeons or birds pursuant to the foregoing exception, to transport them in a humane manner and release them in some remote area. You've seen them???? I was born and raised in San Francisco and I still haven't seen them. I was starting to believe they were an urban myth. A friend who lived in the upper Castro mentioned them to me years ago and when ever I visited I would always search for them but still have never seen them. Then when I hit my teens (early 80's) and I read "Tales Of The City" Maupin mentions them in there. I was told that the original ones were pets that escaped, so if your seeing them now those should be descendants of the escapees from the late 70's.Where were you when you saw them and what time of day was it? |
