Travel Info Planning a trip with my girlfriends to Cali wine country. I know Napa is big, any other suggestions.? Travel Tips To me, when people say "California Wine Country," they mean one thing...the Napa/Sonoma area. There are tons of other areas in CA that have fantastic wineries, but they are not considered wine country. In Sonoma County, I highly recommend the Russian River Valley wineries, specifically, Dry Creek Area (above Santa Rosa near Healdsburg). There are a ton of wineries in this area, including RoShamBo (which is a cool winery to see, even if I don't care for their wines: http://www.roshambowinery.com/ ), the Francis Ford Copolla Presents (one of the most beautiful I have seen: www.ffcwinery.com), Korbel (www.korbel.com)...there are a bunch! There is also a great deli (owned by a Gallo, I believe) right on Dry Creek Road, where you can grab a picnic and head over to one of the wineries. Also great about RRV...not may places charge. And since it is still kind of off the beaten path, it isn't over run by wine snobs. Others While Napa is very nice, depending on where you live the winerys up north by San luis Obispo are very nice too and if you are in southern Cali then you can visit Temecula they have some nice ones too! plus you can go to Pechanga casino & resort which is like vegas............so you get the best of both worlds! Have fun with your trip ! Sonoma is charming... more laid back, and you can stop by the wonderful Hess winery and art gallery on your way between the two valleys. I also recommend, in Napa, staying to the north and east sides of Napa (up the Silverado Trail) as much as possible. The south (around the town of Napa) is much more crowded and touristy. It's a good place to meet guys, but not to enjoy the scenery and wine. Don't miss Darioush (for its amazing winery) Mumm (for a flight of champagnes on the patio overlooking the valley). The town of Calistoga (all the way north) is really fun, full of hot springs, great restaurants and places to get massages. Central Cali has a plethora of wineries, more specifically, Monterey County. Napa is the best as far as fine wine country. I went to the spas there and they were magnificent. Back rubs there are the thing and mud baths really clean out your pores. You can try Sonoma County or other locations: Gilroy, California - This place is loaded with garlic and wine. And Shopping outlets. Aptos, California - They have good spas there and great Ma and Pa shoppes Carmel or Monterey California where you can saunter in Cannery Row and indulge in freshly made saltwater taffy with wine and view the ocean. Or go up North more to Cache Creek, a little close to Vacaville and play with the slot machines there. Since I now live in the islands, those would be the first places I would go. Enjoy!!! http://www.deldottovineyards.com/html/vi... This is a terrific winery we visited while staying at the spa in Sonoma. The "caves" are definately worth a look. There are lots of little wineries around Healdsburg as well. Livermore has a lot of wineries. Also Lodi area. |
