Travel Info What's better? The de young museum or the asian art musem? Travel Tips Personally, I prefer the Palace of the Legion of Honor (which holds mostly Medieval and Renaissance European Art). The collection is displayed inside a replica of the same palace in Paris. The hiking trails and golf courses that surround the site are spectacular, as is the view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Between the De Young Museum and the Asian Art Museum... the De Young is more interesting arthitecturally. However, the actual art in the Asian is of greater historical significance. The De Young's collection consists primarily of American art (with a little tribal African art thrown into the mix). Colonial America is quite dull. You'll see lots of formal, mannerist types of paintings and furniture. The pre-Hispanic stuff from Mexico and Peru are nice, and the small African exhibit is good... but they get repetitive. The highlight is actually the building itself. There's an excellent observation tower overlooking the park, and the exterior is coated wth copper that will change color over time. In contrast, the Asian Art Museum is inside the former library. The idea was inspired by the Musee D'Orsay in Paris (which is a converted train station). However, the neo-classical features of the library does not compliment Asian aesthetics, which makes the museum's art seem sterile and out of place. On the other hand, the art itself (including rare pieces from the Han Dynasty) is the best of its kind in the United States. While the National Palace Museum in Taipei and the Ueno Park Museums in Tokyo are naturally superior... San Francisco's longstanding ties to Asian businesses certainly gives any Western competitor a run for its money. Others I'm sure there's personal preference involved but I prefer the de young - more variety (mod to ancient, local to asian art) and absolutely amazing architecture. asian art museum The Asian Art Museum is really cool, but the de Young is world class. The Asian art museum does not have nearly as much things to do or look at. Another plus to the de young is the building and the lookout tower at the top. You will really enjoy it. |
