Is it the trolley system that bad in San Francisco?

Travel Info
Im planning to visit SF in August, and have read some complaints about the trolley being too crowded and people having to wait even 90 mins. to catch a trolley. They claim the transportation pass is not good because of this. Are there other options for transportation (many taxis available and at a reasonable price?)
or is the trolley ok?

Travel Tips
I'm going to be totally honest here: Only tourists ride the cable cars. They're expensive ($5.00 one-way), they're slow (9 MPH), and they're full of tourists (worse of all).

Most locals use regular buses, the metro, and the commuter rail systems. If you want to 'meet the locals'... duck into a bookstore, buy a good transit map (Streetwise, MUNI, etc.), and head for a bus stop or subway station. Here are some of the main transit providers:

If you can afford to use the taxis extensively, more power to you. They're numerous Downtown... but it's a good idea to ask for a business card or phone number if you're going somewhere outside the city center. The rates are a bit steep:

- First 1/5 mile $2.85
- Each additional 1/5th mile $0.45
- Each minute of waiting, or traffic time delay $0.45
- Airport Exit Surcharge $2.00
Others
The trolley is a must-do, no matter how long you have to wait. Each conductor has his own individual bell ring, people hang off crowded trollies rolling up and down incredible hills. It's great!
I think its fun, but for more people if your in a hurry I'd say thats a bad choice!
The cable car system is indeed crowded, and not really used so much for transportation as it is to wow tourists. Plus, it only goes from Powell to Fisherman's Wharf, or from Van Ness Avenue to the Embarcadero, so your destinations will be limited.

There's a lot of buses. Taxis are plentiful, and since SF is only 49 square miles, your trips will be relatively inexpensive.
Muni is a poorly ran transit system. It has great coverage throughout SF but the service is not that great. If you are looking ot get somewhere in a hurry or need to be on time then a cab might be a better option.
