Clean,budget priced lodging in Frisco?

Travel Info
I'm heading to San Francisco in October for a Social Worker convention and would appreciate info on budget priced,non-flea bag, lodging near the San Francisco Hilton.
Thanx!

Travel Tips
The area around the Hilton Hotel is not a good one; if going out of the Hilton on O'farrel Street, always turn to the right, the district gets better. The tenderloin district is to the immediate left of the hotel... there are hotels in the area; The Mark Twain is probably the best of the budget hotels in the area; although its somewhat away, I'd recommend the Grant Plaza at Grant and Pine Streets, rooms start at 77.00 a night, for a clean room. No garage there. October is prime (high season) in San Francisco, you can try the various web sites for inexpensive rooms, and the San Francisco visitors and convention bureau might be able to help. They can help arrange reservations and information about the city if you need help. I'm a native son; lived in San Francisco 45+ years, hope this helps. A car nut. San Francisco is so much fun! Definitely research it before you go, so you can do everything you want. It's wonderful!!!
For $18 a year you can join Hostelling International USA and then stay in the hostel on Union Square. They have a newly refurbished hotel that costs at most, $45 per night. It is quite nice and a regular hotel in that area will cost minimum of $150 per night, if you can find one. Union Square is in the heart of SF You can get the cable car to the wharf, you can walk to chinatown and north beach you can walk to the ferry building and browse through the many shops and resturants along the building. It is really quite a place to stay because you can see all the beautiful places in SF without any hassel
It is a really nice place to be.
Go online to www.hiusa.org to join.
I belong to this organization and it is truly one of very few bargins left in this country
