Moving to California I have 2 options - San Francisco or Eureka. Salary is same. Which should I choose? Why? |
Travel Info I work in healthcare and have 2 options at the same facility with the same salary, benefits, etc. One is located in San Francisco, the other 300 miles North up in Eureka in Humboldt County. I am married with one child, so we are pretty settled down and would like to live in a place that would be best for the boy. Each seems to have advantages and disadvantages. Which would you choose and why? Travel Tips Obviously salary would go much further in Eureka. But Eureka is far from any major city so you had better enjoy living in rural/coastal environment. If you like kayaking, hiking, etc... and can live without city things (opera, symphony, tons of concerts, major airports,4 star restaurants etc.....) then opt for Eureka. It is about 5 hour drive from San Francisco...so pretty far...and big cities in Oregon are far away too.... If you work in SF and want to stay somewhere that gets hot in summer you can live in Orinda or Walnut Creek or something and just take the train into the city. Alameda is nice and very fast commute to city. Others The best thing would be to take a trip out to both first and look around to find a good school and neighbor hood, both areas are pretty nice in my opinion. I would say go look around first... but I think I would choose Eureka. It seems much more nice than San Fransisco. (I live in southern California). Depends. Are you a city mouse or a country mouse? If you love cities, few are better than SFO. There's lots of culture, things to do, a hip vibe. The downside - its EXPENSIVE!!!! If you are more a country mouse, Eureka is beautiful. Lots of outdoor activities to do and the cost is more reasonable. Either choice is nice. Be prepared, though. Neither SFO or Eureka are in SoCal so if you dream of endless summers, beach boy music, and surfing, LA or San Diego are better choices. Are they providing a housing allowance? Because renting or buying, SF is going to be much more expensive than Eureka. However, you do have the excitement of city life. Prioritizing family life, cost of living, the clear choice is Eureka. For culture, variety, other career opportunities, choose San Francisco. Visit both, as others have said, but your salary will go a lot further in Eureka. I was going to say sf because that's kinda where I'm from and eureka seems kinda tame and boring but if you have a kid and are settled down then maybe eureka is a better place because there will probably be less crime and traffic..you should check out both the place by staying at each one for a weekend and seeing which one you prefer.. |
