Going to San Francisco for 4th of July Weekend. Looking for recommendations!`?

Travel Info
My sister and I are taking my mom to SF and Napa for her birthday over Fourth of July weekend. We'll definitely do all the usual touristy things, but we would love recommendations for things we might miss. Also - where is the best place to go see fireworks? We were thinking that going to Golden State Park with a blanket would be fun, but I would love any recommendations locals or people who have had fabulous vacations there may have. Thanks!!!

Travel Tips
Golden Gate Park would not be a good place to view fireworks since they are shown around Fisherman's Wharf area; the best place to see and do things that day (most locals actually pull out lawn chairs to wait and hog spots for the fireworks early in the day) is right near Ghirardelli Square; there is a small grassy area perfect for blankets. There will be outdoor vendors as well as some streets will be closed off to vehicles after 5 or 6PM so more vendors can open up along the sidewalk of Fisherman's Wharf. Staying in the wharf area is the probably the best idea for the 4th.

You seem to have picked out some of the best places to see in SF (Alcatraz, Chinatown, Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, etc.) But I would highly recommend going to Muir Woods and Sausalito while you folks are either returning to SF from Napa or prior to Napa (both the Muir Woods and Sausalito is over the GGB). Sausalito is a beautiful small city right next to the water and has gorgeous views of the San Francisco Skyline; has shopping, dining, and hotels too. Muir Woods holds some of the oldest and largest Redwoods of California and a fun way to explore.

As far as area to stay, somewhere Downtown SF or near the Embarcadero is good because there is access to lots of public transportation lines. Public trans. is the easiest and usually the most efficient way to get around SF, so even if you guys have a rental car, you might want to hold off on it and only do the rental for the Napa trip. There are daily or weekly passes for MUNI (the main company for public transit) that are for sale; if you pay cash $1.50/adult with a transfer that lasts for 90 minutes.

That's all I can remember for now.....HAVE FUN!

You won't be able to see the fireworks from Golden Gate Park, though it would be nice to go there during the day for a picnic. Don't miss the Conservatory of Flowers.

Best viewing place would be down at the Embarcadero; it will be crowded. Or you could go up to Twin Peaks for a far away but citywide view.

Be sure that all of you have comfy walking (or jogging shoes). SF is a great city for walking and seeing the sights. Did you mean Golden Gate park. Definitely worth a visit if you like parks. But I think that the other ppl are right-- you might not be able to see much of the fireworks being in the park. Don't miss seeing the Golden Gate Bridge. Really breathtaking and seen by tens of thousands of returning G.I.s from WW2, Korea, etc. Chinatown is worth a visit too. Even if you don't care for the sit down meals, you can still get some pastries there and some souvenirs of SF (t-shirts, post cards, model cable cars-- already assembled for you, snow globes, etc.) at reasonable prices. Grant Ave is where most of the souvenir shops are.
