Transportation to Muir Wood, CA?

I am planning to go to Muir Wood, CA this summer. I don;t want tour buses with time ristriction. So if I drive from SF, what is the best time to get there to avoid crowd and congestion (in/out of the City)? Is the parking situation terrible at Muir Wood? I have the parkingphobia (worrying if I can get a spot!) Thanks!!

If you're going on a weekend/holiday, I'd just take one of the morning ferries from the city (to Sausalito). The Muir Woods shuttle bus meets many of the ferries on arrival. No parking hassles, and there are scheduled returns throughout the day (until 7 PM).

Otherwise, get to the woods really early or late. For daytrippers, the gates open at 8 AM (campers get the place all to themselves from dusk to 8 AM). The tour buses usually start arrving at around 10 AM, continuing to mass until the early afternoon. However, most of the congestion is gone there by 3-4 PM.

Just go early in the morning on a weekday.

You could take the 70 bus from 7th and Market to Marin City, then the 66 bus to Muir Woods. That shuttle leaves every 30 minutes, so you wouldn't have time restrictions of a tour bus.
Go on a weekday! Go as early in the day as you can, and if the park isn't open, bring a mug of coffee or a latte to enjoy from Sausalito or Mill Valley!
