I really want to move to San Francisco...? |
Travel Info but everyone is telling me how bad it is there..Like the smell, the pollution and the prices...what are the ups of living in San Fran? Travel Tips As cities of its size go, San Francisco is about the cleanest. The air is always sparkling clear because of winds that come off the ocean. The water is also very good. Pollution and smell are not a problem. The problem is that property value are are expensive and rents are very high. The Bay Area is a large area with lots of different kinds of neighborhoods-suburbs, small towns, even some semi-rural areas. In general it's more expensive to live here than most places in the country, but that's only because so many people want to live here. I love it here! The climate is wonderful. It hardly ever rains except in the dead of Winter. It's not hot and humid in the Summer. It's a little hot inland but low humidity so the heat doesn't seem so bad. There's a lot to see and do--great restaurants, clubs, museums, etc.etc. We have an ocean and mountains and forests and great regional parks to get away for a Saturday. The state's geography is very diverse so If you have a weekend you can visit deserts, seashore, mountains, redwood forests, historical sites, etc. etc. And there's great ethnic food--Mexican, Indian, Thai, etc. because we have people here from everywhere. Others San Francisco has been declared a 'barrier city', too expensive too live. Frisco was the most expensive city in the states a few months ago, I think Boston surpassed it for just a few weeks. Like any mega-expensive city, San Francisco is divided into the extremely rich and the extremely poor, with the middle class and working class being priced out. So that means you have all these homeless street people and petty criminals living on the streets while wealthy people walk past them into their condos or luxury suites or hotel residencies. The unwary get mugged or accosted. I haven't lived there, but I've visited there many times, for weeks at a time, for the job I had at that time. It's a great city, fun, cutural, alive. Main downside is cost of housing, and, depending on where you grew up, potentially the environment (I grew up in New England, so I would tend more towards Sonoma Valley where they have foliage). Aside from that, it's a fun place to be. Go for it! I live in SF. Moved here from NYC. There is no comparison when you talk about smell, pollution and prices. SF's lifestyle is way better. The only thing you have to worry about is that it's cold most of the year. The fog can be unbearable in some parts of the city, but that's only during the summer. People are friendly, streets are clean (comparatively), and living costs are nominal for a metropolis. Depends on who you are. I hated it. There were some positives, but the weather is terrible, traffic is unabearable and the cost of living is way to high, for what? Aug. and Sept. are the only nice warm months. It rains for three months straight Jan-Mar. Traffic is the worse, if you live in the city you don't need a car(so they say). Not the truth, you will want to get out of the city, probably want to go to Napa to thaw out and dry off. Don't even get me going on how they drive there. I will say, it is a melting pot of cultures, so if you have all these cultures they all drive different. Not good!!! Last, rent is going to kill you. You should at least make $65000 to be able to live somewhat normal, but you won't be living in the city on that salary unless you have a roommate. As for the ups of living? Live near or around Palo Alto, that is the only decent place. The temperature can be a 25 degrees warmer in Palo Alto and only 30 minutes from the city. The other up, 1 hour from Napa. Like I said, some people love the diversity, the SF attitudes, for some reason the weather, it just depends on you. Good luck!!!! I have never really experienced the smell and polution...but then I lived in LA where it is really bad so being here is a dream. For me the hardest part is the price...which is why I live in San Jose not SF.....I have found prices cheaper than the city....but they are still high and the cost of living is high....but it is worth it to live here. I would never change it too I love it here. The weather is a big bonus, the sights and the beaches, and just about everything is great about this area. I don't know who "everyone" is, but its clear that they don't live here (SF). The smell? Martinez smells bad, but that's because there is a refinery there. SF itself smells fine, for a big city. You catch the occasional urine whiff from time to time, but that's city life really. Pollution? No, that's LA you are thinking of. The air hear is nice and clear, the sea winds clear it out no problem. The prices? Yes, SF is not cheap for rent, that is true. Are there restaurants that serve $100 omelets? Yes. Are there places that serve $4 omelets? Yes. Check out www.craigslist.org for rent prices. A typical room in a shared house costs between $550-900 a month, sometimes with utilities included. That is a wide range, but it all depends on where you are in the City, and how much ghetto-ness you can tolerate. Studio apts run from $800 and up. One bedrooms from $1100 and up. Not cheap, but if you split things between people you can save money on rent. Food can be cheap, and there is always somewhere with drink specials if you like going out, so you can not spend a ton of money if you don't want to, its all about lifestyle. Cook at home, don't party in bars too much, don't buy too many clothes/games/gadgets etc... and you can make it on an income of $22k a year or so, but not much less than that. Jobs pay more out here though than other places, because of the higher housing prices. |
