Can anyone recommend a nice (but not overly pricey) hotel in San Francisco? Thanks!?

Travel Info
This is for a honeymoon in October 2007. After researching San Francisco a little, I think we prefer the Union Square area.

Travel Tips
The most luxurious hotels in the Union Square area are the Campton Place, Four Seasons, St. Regis, and W. Unfortunately, all are $300.00 + establishments. Expect classy staff, perks like chocolate on the pillows, and personal attentiveness when it comes to your sightseeing / entertainment needs.

If you don't mind staying in a soulless "business hotel", the Downtown Marriott (4th and Mission), Westin St. Francis (Union Square), and Hilton Tower (O'Farrell and Mason) usually offer good deals ($150.00 or less) on their older and lower floor rooms. The advantage to these hotels are: the rooms will probably be clean, there's plenty of in-house dining, and the amenities are what you'd expect of a large chain. Impersonal, but prompt.

If you want something with more character, however, you might want to try one of the smaller boutique hotels. They have a wide variety of price ranges and locations. You can find one that suits your budget. Services and amenities at these places are hit-and-miss though. It might be great; it might be horrible. The two largest companies in San Francisco for this kind of accommodation are JDV and Kimpton:

Hm. I stayed at the Dakota hotel and hostel, which is part of the Adalaide Hostel. The Dakota has private rooms with a bath, tv, fridge/micro, and full sized bed. It was $70/night. It wasn't too far from Union Square at all - maybe a 5 minute walk.

But since this is your honeymoon, you might want something a little nicer. The Dakota was clean (and was cleaned everyday), gave fresh towels every day, but the sheets were thin and the noise level was high because the building is old and windows weren't well insulated.

The bonus for the Dakota was the ability to have the continental breakfast around the corner at the Adelaide hostel.
the merriot is nice!
Argonaut Hotel, hands down.

Best rooms and views
For your visit Union Square is probably the best place to stay. There are lots of good restaurants, shops, theaters and clubs in the Union Square area. It is centrally located easy to walk to many places, easier to get cabs, with lots of public transportation options. Driving in the city can be confusing for visitors and parking is difficult and expensive. Muni offers multi day passes that are good for buses, trolley, light rail and the cable cars [unique experience but $5 per ride].

Joie de Vivre http://www.jdvhospitality.com has several hotels in the Union Square area within your budget. Each hotel is unique and they have a cool free program where they match you with a local person, called a Golden Gate Greeter, who shares your interests to spend a few hours with you and familiarize yourself with the city. http://www.goldengategreeter.c...
