Alternative route to tahoe not i-80? |
Travel Info any shortcuts around 80 when driving from sf to tahoe. it's too crowded! Travel Tips From SF to tahoe there are no short-cuts.Here is a map of five choices: http://www.virtualtahoe.com/ltva/allroad... However, there are some routes slightely less traveled. You can drive up Highway 24 to 4 to 160 along the river to Sacramento, and then over to 50. There are also some of the E Highways such E13 to 204 to 88. You can also see that highway 4 goes all the way to 88. Any route that requires using 88 or 89 will be closed during the winter, and using 50 requires chains most of the time. You can also take the long way around by going through Yosemite on 120 and up 395. Be aware, that this is also often closed for winter. I have also crossed over on 108 (winter closure). I have used all of these ways, and they are all beautiful. I forgot to mention you can take 108 to 49 to 50 without getting into the snow until you reach 50. You need to get a "Bay to Mountain" map from AAA. It has every one of these on it, and many more. I make it a habit to travel these roads several times every summer. I don't go in the winter. A couple of years, I went down to Bakersfield and over 58 to 395. Of course that is a several day trip. Source(s): I was a party tour hostess for many years. Other Travel Tips If you go on the 101 S., take the 92 towards Hayward. Then take the 880 N. to the 238. Take the 580 E. after that to the 5. When at the 5, go North to Sacramento. Take Hwy 50 to Lake Tahoe there. Google Maps Yahoo Maps |
