Can I avoid HWY-152?

Travel Info
I frequently drive up from Los Angeles to San Jose, and I always take 110 to 5 to 152, etc. I really hate 152, especially at night, because oncoming traffic is so close by. Also, on the way back, it's ALWAYS backed up because 152 crosses a different freeway and everyone stops to take turns. I was wondering if there is a better route? Probably not, but worth a shot. Thanks.

Travel Tips
I do that drive all the time (and have done so every other month for the last 10 years) and I used to take the same route you did (Pasadena to Monterey) until I found this route:

Take 110 to 5 FWY N

take 5 FWY N to HWY 46 WEST

take HWY 46 WEST to 101 FWY north

take 101 FWY north to San Jose.

Whole trip takes about 5 hrs and it's a whole lot less traffic than the other way.

On good days, i've made it in about 4 1/2 hrs.

I avoid 152 like the plague. Many accidents, always backed up.

Good luck, drive safe.

Others
152 used to be called Pacheco Pass. When I was a kid, we would hear about head-on collisions all the time on this winding, 2 lane highway. Since then, the highway has been updated. Dont be afraid of it now. It simply still has its bad reputation from years past.

One thing you can try is stay on I-5 up to 580 and take that over to the 680 and then back down into San Jose.

The milage is more, but because it is all Interstate it actually did not take that much more time.

Your only other Alternative is to take 101 from San Jose to LA which is quite a bit longer.
I too will take the 46 across. It's only really about 20 min longer if that. I do it every 2 weeks!
You can avoid HWY-152 by just taking Southwest Airlines. The many times you say you go there, you should be hooking yourself up with a frequent flyer membership that saves you money to fly back & forth. If driving back & forth from LA to SJ stresses you so much, then stop driving there. It's not worth it anyway, the heavy mileage you use on your car & the amount of the gas you spend to drive to the Bay Area equals to the same amount of a Southwest Airlines plane ticket.

USE YOUR HEAD.
