Where to live near San Jose?

Travel Info
I will soon be moving to San Jose from the East Coast and will be working near the intersection of 880 and 280.

My girlfriend will be going to UC Berkeley.

So, where can I live that will: 1) be an easy commute to work (say 15 minutes) -- I will be working long hours, 2) be a decent area to live, and 3) make visiting my gf or her visiting me as easy as possible (close to BART or public transportation would be ideal to have as an option).

I am planning on visiting San Jose soon and seeing things for myself, but appreciate your help in narrowing things down a bit before hand. Thanks!

Travel Tips
I would look into Fremont. I use to work at 280/880 and it took me about 15 minutes without traffic by using 680 which turns into 280. South Fremont (Warm Springs) is a good area and your not too far from Bart and close to SJ. Source(s): Did this commute for five years and would visit my then boyfriend in SF using BART.

Other Travel Tips
i would say fremont

end of the bart line

then you can just go south on 880

but that commute will suck

but any commute along 880 or 280 will so why not
milpitas,campbell, los gatos,(scenic)santa clara
are all close to sanjose.
sanjose has alot of nice areas like.

try checking out web sites we have great shopping ,entertainment
close to beaches,san francisco.
(besides bart theres light rail and caltrain)transit. good luck....
If you have a car and flexible work hours, you can live as much as 12-15 miles away from 880 & 280 while meeting your first requirement. If you must be at work before 9 AM, then you will need to live closer, particularly if you travel in the peak directions, or allow for a longer commute. In the morning, traffic is heaviest from the "bedroom" communities of South San Jose and the East Bay. The commute from Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and the cities northwest of there have an easier commute, but housing there is more expensive.

To visit your GF, you could drive to Berkeley directly or to the BART terminations in Fremont or Daly City. For her to visit you, consider picking her up at those stations. If you are on the peninsula, there is also CalTrain. It doesn't got to Berkeley so a transfer is necessary in San Francisco. The South Bay also has light rail and buses.

Your first and third criteria are at odds with each other. Favoring one makes the other suffer.

You don't give your criteria for what makes a place decent. Crime is fairly low for most cities near 880 & 280. San Jose has some night life, but the best social scene is in San Francisco. The South Bay has a diversity of restaurants. There is plenty of open space and parks nearby.

yeah, basically there is no place within 15 minutes of san jose close to the bart. You'll have to live in fremont, union city, or newark to be able to be close to either the fremont or union city Bart stations which are the southernmost.

In terms of nice places to live. West of 280 and 880 is nicer than east of 880 and 280. i used to live (for 7 years) on stevens creek and kiely about one mile west of that intersection. the further west you go on stevens creek the nicer it gets, the farther east on stevens creek, or north or south of stevens creek you went, the WORSE it got. In other words cupertino and santa clara are nicer places to live than san jose, north santa clara, and campbell. Cupertino is the nicest of them all in my opinion. so if you can afford to live there, the area around de anza junior college is real nice, then do so. it's quiet, family oriented, and laid back with lots of parks and coffeeshops and some good hiking not too far away. The key thing here is that neighborhoods change REAL fast, so just 1/4 mile one way or another makes all the difference, this is why I stress heading west of 280/880 towards cupertino hugging stevens creek blvd, rather than heading off in other directions. also, if you do that you'll be close to the freeway.

You can also choose to compromise, and live somewhere between the Bart and San Jose, like maybe milpitas. My advise is DON'T do it. the pain in the butt dealing with the commute to work will more than outweigh any benefits in being closer to the bart. when you want to go to berkeley, you can easily drive to bart and park your car there and go from there.
