Easiest way to BART from San Jose without much driving? |
Travel Info I'm new to San Jose. What is the best way to get to a BART station without much driving? (I have driven to the Fremont BART a few times.) I would prefer to avoid buses. Does San Jose VTA metro rail go to a BART station? or "CalTrain"? Travel Tips Basically, there are two options to get from San Jose to the BART system: 1) Take VTA's Express 180 bus to Fremont BART, or 2) Take a VTA bus or light rail to either the San Jose Diridon or Tamien stations, then take Caltrain northbound to the Millbrae station. The Millbrae Caltrain and BART stations are co-located. Option #1 is better if you are trying to get to the East Bay (Fremont, Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, Pleasanton, Concord, etc). It is also the ONLY option after 10:30pm (9pm on Sundays), which is when the last Caltrain leaves SJ Diridon. The 180 also runs earlier in the morning than Caltrain on weekends. The ride on the 180 bus from SJ to Fremont is about 45 minutes (a bit more during commute hours). Option #2 is better if you are heading to San Francisco or anywhere on the peninsula (Daly City, Colma, SF Airport, etc.). The Caltrain ride between SJ and Millbrae is about an hour - a bit less if you take a "Baby Bullet train." There is no direct transfer between VTA's light rail and BART. You might also take a look at the Amtrak Capitol trains that leave from San Jose Diridon Station. They don't connect very well to BART (the only real transfer point is at Richmond BART), but they do make quite a few stops in the East Bay (Jack London Square, Fremont, Hayward, etc.), and go all the way up to Sacramento and the Sierra foothills. AIRPORT THEN SWITCH TOTHE BART THERE VTA Ligtrail does go to many junctions with Caltrain, At Tamien, at San Jose DIRIDON, at Mountain View, and at the last stop San Fransisco. The one BART Junction is at Milbrae. Which is at about San Fransisco Airport. Since you are starting from San Jose I would recomend starting on Lightrail and switching to Caltrain. Then at Milbrae switch to Bart. Unless a Caltrain station is closer to you than a Lightrail station, then you would just switch to BART at Milbrae. ~~~I Hope This Helps~~~ Caltrain Maps, Former San Jose Resident |
