Travel Tips
Let's see, let's see, let's see....

Being 24 and living in San Jose, I can tell you I pay $675 for a studio and its CRAPPY. There aren't any interesting and cool people my age in my neighborhood, and I would NOT, definitely NOT live in downtown San Jose again (For starters, nice apartments are EXPENSIVE, and then you have to deal with different types of drunken crowds and undesirables that may or may not inhabit areas around your neighborhood).

Downtown San Jose is not a pleasant area to live.

Traffic to/from San Jose is awful from Palo Alto as well. My boyfriend sits in traffic for an hour trying to get home every day from work - even if he leaves a little early, he still doesn't beat it.

Sunnyvale might be a good area, as they do have a nice little downtown area, and its not very far from Mountain View, which also has a decent downtown area.

Nothing is very far from San Francisco either if you want to head out on the weekends and meet interesting and cool people your age. Just a short Caltrain ride or drive.

And Chinese food? Sunnyvale!!! There are so many great places there... yummy food, making me hungry just thinking about it.
Others
Stanford University is next door to Palo Alto. You'll meet lots of interesting and young people at the coffee shop on campus. Lots of interesting places (San Francisco, Berkeley, Santa Cruz) are about an hour's drive of Palo Alto.

If you want night life on weeknights, I recommend San Francisco.

The interesting places to live tend to have higher rents because the demand is higher of course. If money is important, consider the East Bay.

I think the best Chinese food is around San Mateo and Millbrae. If you're in SF, the new Chinatown (11th and Clement) is much better than touristy old Chinatown.
San Francisco is still the best place to live if you want excitement. However, Mountain View isn't bad either. Find a place close to Castro Street where there are restaurants and cafes (not much of a club scene though). Palo Alto is only minutes away depending where you're going either by freeway or side street.

There's also Caltrain that will take you to SF in no time.
you'll be lcuky if you can find an apartment for 900 dollars in the area your looking for. its very expensive here...a decent apartment is like 1000 at the least. if you want a cheap place i suggest down town san jose otherwise its gonna be alot of money
find other routs, san jose traffic can be bumper to bumper in peak hours...
To go from SJ to PA is about 35 min drive up 101, and probably a little shorter on 280 (it all depends where in SJ you will live)

I'd suggest looking in Sunnyvale or perhaps even in Campbell. PA is expensive.. I lived there in a 1 br and it cost 1200... then after a year it went up to 1300. Craigs List is a GREAT resource for places.. If you want to get under that $800 mark you may have to room with other people (that's how I got below my $700 in Milpitas). The Bay area in a whole is espensive.. If you want a good area (low crime and such) you will see a great difference in price. If you don't worry about that you could look in East Palo Alto (this is a rough neighbourhood, don't bother if you are worried about that).

As for areas with things to do.... Anything from SJ up to Belmont (south of SF)_would be great. Try looking into Redwood City, San Carlos, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Belmont, Foster City and Los Altos. These areas are within no more than a 45 min drive durring traffic hours. Once you learn the area, you will find short cuts and you'll learn the timing of the rushes.
Living in the bay area since 2003
There are tons of things to do in the area. Hot spots include Palo Alto's University Avenue, Los Gatos, and San Francisco.

Cheap apartments can be frightening. Shop around as they vary a lot. Consider living in Sunnyvale, Mountain View or Campbell.

Dim Sum and Chinese restaurants abound. Check out the Ranch 99 shopping markets for Chinese food ingredients.
