I'm moving from NYC to work in Palo Alto and am thinking about living in San Jose? How is it? |
Travel Info How is it overall I'm asking. I'm in my mid-20s and like to go out and have fun and will need to meet people. I would like to live in SF, but it seems like the commute would be torture. San Jose seems good because its fairly close to Palo Alto, somewhat affordable and provides a good quality of life. Any info. would help. Travel Tips I did the same exact thing you're doing (only I work in Santa Clara, not Palo Alto)..... It's different, that's for sure. Cheaper, different food. Things close a lot earlier. There are some pluses and minuses, but all in the all, the weather's better, the jobs are better... and even if you live in San Jose - San Francisco is only a 45-50 minute drive away, and Santa Cruz with its gorgeous beaches, is only a 30-40 minute drive over the mountain. I'm a Jersey girl myself, lived in Brooklyn for a few years before moving out here because of a guy I was in love with at the time. There's no place like New York City, but if San Jose was so horrible, I would have moved back a while ago.... Others Its nice here I live in Sanjose theres quite a bit here clubs, resteraunts, shopping, entertainment, healthy, clean, close to beaches, amusement parks I like it better than sanfrancisco mainly because less traffic you can actually drive here....lol there is quite a bit of traffic during rush hour.but thats the only bad I can think of. San Jose is fine to lice in if you're working in Palo Alto. I have friends who live in Santa Clara and work in Palo Alto and some who are actually living in Palo Alto because they want to bike to work. :) Every place has outrageous and good rent. It all depends on where you look. :) try http://sfbay.craigslist.org/ you can check out the housing and room rental and apartment listings there. :) Good Luck :) San Jose can be a good place to live. So could Sunnyvale and Mountain View. Both of these are closer to Palo Alto than San Jose. (similarly expensive) San Jose is okay...do LOTS of research on where you move though...you could be in a nice neighborhood then a block over it is sketchy. Not something that you would particularly want. Other cities you could consider are Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino...I personally live in Los Gatos and work in Sunnyvale. It is definitely worth the 20-45 minute commute. Check out Palo Alto. Not east Palo Alto, though. But since Stanford it right there, you could meet some very interesting people your age in the area. Couldn't hurt. I live in Palo Alto and work in Santa Clara immediately northwest of San Jose. I have also lived in San Jose for eight years. I recommend you live in San Francisco. You'll find more night life there than San Jose or Palo Alto. I've worked in Silicon Valley for 20 years. At every company I've been with, I've had one or more coworkers living in SF. By car, the commute is under an hour (one way). You can also take CalTrain to two stations in Palo Alto (downtown and California Ave). Many companies have shuttles from the stations to work. If you like hockey or good and cheap Vietnamese food, then choose San Jose (Go Sharks!). If not, take SF. |
