California camping from July 4th-8th (running short on time to book). We want it all! Any advice on locations? |
Travel Info We don鈥檛 have many opportunities to travel so we are trying to find something really ideal this time. We have a list on amenities we are looking for in a location. First thing we would like is easy access to the redwoods (any redwoods), mountains, and the beach. We were thinking somewhere with a lot of hiking opportunities, but where hiking is not too much of a necessity. We would also like some of the more modern conveniences such as restrooms and showers on site. This will cut back on some of the equipment we would have to bring with us. The last thing we are looking for is the travel convenience. We will be flying into a major airport (probably San Jose) and renting a car. We would prefer to go to a site where our rental car not be compromised by the journey, and somewhere not too far from the airport. We understand that to get to the really great locations with the redwoods we would have to travel several hours north of San Jose to get to somewhere like Humboldt County. We are open to suggestions for areas further away but we are also hoping to find some options closer to San Jose. Something in the Santa Cruz area would be worth looking into, or a similar location. (They're near Lake Tahoe, and are about a two through three hour drive from San Jose.) P.S. (If you're flying to San Jose, why would you want to go to Santa Cruz? You might as well fly into Los Angeles.) My elementary school teachers who took us on field trips, and those places had all the things you mentioned. one of my favorite places is Lake Almanor, CA. I'd fly into Reno, spend the night in Reno and then head to Lake Almanor. There are plenty of really nice private beach homes to rent too. Boat rental and if you must head south to San Jose, then fly, or drive through San Francisco and into Santa Clara. You will have a great vacation. I live in the Monterey Bay area and campgrounds here are booked up months in advance (about 6). Big Sur is beautiful and I am not sure how the camping reservation sit. is there but there are several private campgrounds you might have luck with. But the hiking is unbeatable. Coming to this part of Cali from San Jose Airport takes about 1-1.5hours but the drive is so pretty you don't mind it. If you didn't mind staying inland and taking the chance to explore the whole Cen Coast you could try areas like Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy. Good luck finding a spot, I promise if you come here you will fall in love w/our beautiful views!! Butano State Park is beautiful. its a 5 or 10 minute drive to the beach, i think you can even walk but i may be wrong. it fits the qualifications except for nice facilities for grooming. its has an outhouse, and i believe there are showers.... its in the middle of the redwoods, next to the beach, and lots of places to hike. the beaches surrounding it are some of my favorites and arent too populated. its 30 minutes north of santa cruz off of highway 1 and near a farm, phipps ranch, that has berry picking. you could also try big basin, they have nicer bathrooms. all the camping places along hwy 1 are really beautiful. enjoy this area!! so i looked at the butano site and they have bathrooms with runnig water, but no showers!! any of the parks in that area are nice though, i dont think youll be disapointed. ano nuevo, henery cowell redwoods, and natural bridges are good ones too. Big Basin in Saratoga, CA is a nice place to camp. Its not that far from San Jose and Santa Cruz. Its a state park and there are a ton of redwoods around. I have been there before and I thought it was a nice place. The park is about 25-30 mins from downtown San Jose. |
