Travel Info Hi, I want 2 drive my kids to upper californa area & there is a park were u can look 4 gold, Were is this place, can you please give me names or by were they might be, thanks Travel Tips Sorry, the gold was cleared out over 150 years ago. Oh, well. Try silver in Nevada. Others The original gold discovery site is in Coloma, California. There is a state park there (Marshall Gold Discovery Park). Several local stores sell gold pans and you can certainly go down to the river and pan for gold. Just south of Coloma, on Hwy 49, is the town of Placerville (also historically known as Hangtown). In Placerville there is a private park containing the remains of a working mine. You may also find this to be interesting. The website for the Marshall Gold Discovery Park is http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=484... The website for the Gold Bug Mine in Placerville is http://www.goldbugpark.org/ Placerville is east of Sacramento on Highway 50; Coloma is north of Placerville on Hwy 49 (Spring Street). If you are flying in, the closest airport is in Sacramento. If you're going to drive from San Jose (I just noticed your question was in the SJ category), take the 680 north across the Benecia bridge, then highway 80 east to Sacramento. From Sacramento, take highway 50 east to Placerville. http://pbskids.org/wayback/goldrush/tp.h... http://www.associatedcontent.com/article... pan for gold here-http://www.columbiacalifornia.com/... Check out the Sacramento area. That's more "gold country". Gold adventures are between sacramento and lake tahoe. I would go to Donner Lake...I was at least able to find fools gold but it's a good bit of california history at Donner Lake. Anywhere near the Calaveras area and Berryessa Lake. Theres a city called Angles Camp. Its in the Calaveras county and even has cavern tours http://www.caverntours.com/ as for gold being cleared out... thats not entirely true... there are still soem gold somewhere in California... just very remote and hard to get to |
