Travel Tips
Hi Cat-

Downtown San Jose has gotten really nice in the past 5-10 years (the rest of SJ, not so much), with great hotels, restaurants, museums, clubs, etc. It's not a great place to catch the sunrise, as it is in a valley (Silicon Valley). If you have to be in San Jose to catch the sunrise, try to stay at the Hotel DeAnza (refurbished art deco building from the 20's) or the Fairmont (new/modern) on an upper floor facing east. The Fairmont has an outdoor pool on one of the upper floors, and they don't have a full service restaurant there, but they do serve lite meals pool side- that would be a nice place to catch the sunrise. But anywhere you stay in the city, the view will be obscured by all of the skyscrapers.

If you don't have to be in San Jose proper, and can drive 45 mins to an hour out of SJ, I would either driver over to the beach in Santa Cruz (45 min drive, I used to live there), or up to San Francisco (1 hr drive) where you can just take your java and sit on the Marina Green and watch the sun rise over the bay. There are SO many great places to watch the sun rise in SF, I couldn't begin to list them all here, but I lived there for years, too, and if you are interested, leave a comment and give me more info, and I will help you out.

Also, in San Jose, you could drive up to the top of Mount Hamilton (I'm directionally challenged so you'll have to get a map, or MapQuest it to double check my directions...). From downtown, I *think* you take 280 S to 101 S, exit Tully Rd East, turn rt on Quimby Rd, then rt on Mt. Hamilton Rd (aka CA-130). There is absolutely *nothing* up there- just nature, so take whatever you might need with you. It is a great spot for viewing the entire valley and the sun rise, and is about 15-20 miles out of downtown (up a windy 2 lane road), not sure how long the drive is- it's been a long time. The last time I made that trip I think we had to stop to let cows meander across the road- and they did meander... slow buggers!!

I don't know what kind of food you like, but my favorite date restaurant is called 71 St. Peter. It's a romantic little Mediterranean bistro, that has a new menu every day, a great wine list, and incredible desserts- especially the chocolate lava cake. It's in a little area called San Pedro Square, that has many good restaurants, a comedy club, a dinner theatre, a farmers market and a brew pub (and easy public parking).

There is also an amazing restaurant called E & O Trading Company on the corner of S First Street and San Fernando (a block from the Fairmont) that has all kinds of Southeast Asian Cuisine. It's unlike any place I've ever been (food wise, but nice decor/atmosphere, too). Everyone I know loves it! If you love authentic Mexican food, there is this *incredible* hole in the wall called La Taqueria, also on S. First St. near the corner of Santa Clara Street (it's on the same block as E & O, at the other end, across the street- only open until 4 or 5, so pretty much a lunch place) that has the BEST Mexican food I've ever had... (it's not a romantic date place- but it's cheap and yummy!!) Their carne asada tacos and flour quesadillas with avo are to die for!!

I also know great French, Italian, American, Indian, Thai, Japanese (Japan Town is just a few blocks out from downtown), Chinese, Sushi, etc... restaurants, and other hotels, plus all kinds of fun stuff to do, so let me know if there is something more specific you want to know. I know the area rather well, as you can tell, and I'm more than happy to help you out. I think I should start writing for their Chamber of Commerce!!

Good luck to you and your boyfriend, I wish you all the best :)

Other Travel Tips
it is north of salinas and south of san francisco :) known for there shops and beginings of buisnesses like yahoo!
The best place to go see a nice view of the city is in Milpitas. from San Jose, take highway 680 North, exit Jacklin Rd, make a right turn at the light, pass 1 light, make a left, then make a right on Country Club Drive, make a left on the 2nd street on your left hand side, go up the hill & there's an area there where you can park & there's an incredible view of the Bay Area, it's awesome if you go when it's dark. I use to always go to this spot. It's a very special place to go :)
I live in Hawaii now, but I am from the Bay Area, lived in San Jose for 15 years :)
