I would have to disagree with the previous answers. I have had Cingular for 2 years and must say it is a crappy service. You know those commercials where it shows one person talking and the other cannot hear them anymore and then Cingular says something about no more dropped calls? I had a free phone when I signed up for service and had dropped calls all the times. People convinced us it was the free phones because they give away junk phones, etc. So, we upgraded our phones in Dec 2006. Now we don't have the dropped calls we had before. We have exactly what the commercials show. We are still connected, but one cannot hear the other. We laugh and say "well, it is not a dropped call". I think it was better when it just disconnected me from the other person because at least then I did not keep talking for a minute before realizing that the person on the other end could not hear me! I know at least 10 people who have Verizon and love it. None of them have ever said anything bad about Verizon.

Another thought for you if you stay in the local area mostly is Metro PCS. We used to have Metro and got a signal from Redding to Tahoe to Merced to almost Big Sur. The signal was great. There is no contract and no counting minutes. You pay a flat fee for the month. We stopped using them because we were traveling out of state often and then the phone did not work. Now they offer an out of area plan that you can sign up for. I cannot wait for my contract with Cingular to expire!

I have Verizon and they work better for me.... but I think they're both good carriers actually.

Both companies have nice coverage in the San Jose area...but go with Verizon because Cingular has the worst customer service ever!
Depends on where you live. I had Verizon, it works in certain place at my home like upstair but down stair no receptions nor did I get it in the Berkeley Hills....I wasn't a big fan of Cingular 6 years ago but they really improved their service and I love it. I SAY CINGULAR!!!!
