How can my 4-yr old daughter avoid hurting her ears during airplane landing? Is it the one called sonic boom? |
Travel Info I get slight deafness whenever the airplane starts to land and it hurts my ears as if a very very tiny pin is puncturing them. I don't want my daughter to experience that. For the first time, she will be traveling with me to visit her father who is working abroad. Travel Tips It's nor "sonic boom". It's caused by difference pressure between inside and outside the ears. If candy doesn't help, you'd better put earplug on her ears. If you don't have earplugs, then you can use earphone (from walkman, mp3 player, etc.) and let her listen to the music while airplane landing or take-off. Others TRY CHEWING GUM IT WORKS FOR SOME KIDS You could have her chew gum..That works for some people...The other thing you can do too..Is make it a game with her and have her yawn as much as she can while you guys are landing. Sweets! simple but effective! Just before take off and landing give her some chewy sweets. Im not sure why this works but it does. The same way you might hold your nose and blow to release the pressure in your ears. Hope this helps. I have tried it on both by kids and it helped! Any kind of confectionery will do, something hard like a boiled sweet or hard candy so it lasts a few minutes. Swallowing equalises the pressure and she will not notice it. Suck a sweet or something. Pressure in the inner ear increases because the Eustachian tube has collapsed as a result of increased external pressure. Sucking opens up the tube and equalizes pressure between inner ear and outside. Some airlines will hand out boiled sweets for this purpose. Ok, firstly no, it's not called Sonic Boom unless you are travelling on Concorde and since they don't use it anymore, no it's not. About the ear thing: The science behind it is that there is a difference in pressures as you take off and land. What would be best to do is to: Give her like a hard-boiledsweet or something to suck on, basically you want her to keep swallowing and as you suck on a sweet (candy or whatever) it makes you swallow as you're sucking it. For you: I would suggest either sucking on a sweet, or you could try as the plane takes off take a big deep breath in, then as you feel your ears going strange, pinch your nose as hard as you can so you can't breathe out of it and then try rally hard in one attempt to try and breathe out through it. This will equalise the pressures and you're pain-free. It also works when you're landing too. Scuba Divers do this when they go up and down under-water with the pressure changes too |
