What percentage of Saudi women wear niqab (cover their faces)? |
Travel Info Is it completly their choice to cover their faces or is their pressure to do so? Is it true that religious police can tell a woman to cover her face? Also for woman who do completly cover up..Do you wear all the time infront of non marham. Or only when you are out in public ie shoping..But whren you are in your house with none marham men such as bother in laws..Do you just wear a head scarf? Travel Tips Hello A large percentage of Saudi women wear niqab, but it really depends on where you're looking. Saudi Arabia is a very large country. In certain areas, it's very rare to see a woman's face in public, while in others it's totally normal. As for choice/pressure, it is choice for some, social pressure to conform for others and forced for a few... Some people wear it all the time in front of non-mahram men, some only care to wear it where they expect a large male "population" (e.g. shopping) to stop people staring (especially where it's rare to see someone uncovered).. in fact, some people even wear it in front of WOMEN-ONLY but that's another thing (usually done by older bedouin women) I personally wear niqab out of choice, in front of ALL non-mahram men (yes, even my in-laws) To recap, people who don't wear it believe it's not compulsory (wajib) in Islam. People who wear it sometimes either do so for social or modesty reasons People who wear it in front of all men usually believe that it is wajib Others for some women its their choice.. others there is intense pressure by other family members to cover... Luckily the family I belong to are very western and open.. I do not cover my face (I answered in length to your other question).. I am 29years old, American-Saudi, raised in both countries, married to a Saudi, I have 2 small kids now.. I walk the streets in a light cover, sometimes black, sometimes other colors.. I use a light silk scarf, something you might see in any movie of USA.. Remember the movie with Princess Grace of Morocco and how she wore a scarf while driving down the road.. I wear something like that.. a nice silk floral scarf.. .. Some ladies of my immediate family (my sisters in laws) do still cover wearing all black and wear a veil, some dont.. They also dont feel any different towards me while we are out together shopping or in public.. As while I am in the pressence of my husbands family, I dont cover except to wear appropriate clothing, (non sheer or reveiling) and a light scarf over my hair.. ..
