I think that you'll find that the A-A community is more dispersed geographically in Seattle than many Midwestern cities. Seattle, like any city, has its wealthy areas, middle class areas and poor areas. You'll find A-A's living in all. For the most part people in Seattle don't pay a lot of attention to race. A couple of Mayors ago we had Norm Rice, as fine a man as you'd hope to meet. No one commented on the fact that Norm was black. I doubt that few even thought about much about it.

To a great extent this geographical dispersion has resulted in less of the A-A culture you describe. Everyone just fits in, gets along and does the things they like to do together. Just the way it should be.

If the African Americans community in Seattle is anything like the rest of America, they are probably living in the worst neighborhoods. More than likely they are just as exploited as the rest of the urban areas. They probably make up the vast majority of renters. They no doubt have the worst school systems. Of course they pay higher prices for the basic needs. I would also think its pretty safe to say theres at least 2 liquor stores in every block of the business streets. I would guess that home owners, renters, and auto insurance rates are grossly inflated. IF THIS DOES NOT HELP, GOOGLE >>>>>> DEMOGRAPHICS SEATTLE

The agency I modeled for in 1980 was in am area called Ranier Valley. At the first stop light off of the freeway I noticed I was the only caucasion as far as I could see so while you might ask someone who knows better, another person of African descendent I also hear that capital hill is the Seattle version of what is called the L.A. area melting pot. This is due to the diversity of the people, all different kinds of ethnicity, sexual choices and a very artsy and creative area. I live north of there in Edmonds, Wa. which is only a 15 minute drive. Capital Hill is one of the 7 hills in Seattle that all have differnent names. It is also reffered to as Pill Hill being that there are Alot of hospitals all within spitting distance. It is 5 minutes from downtown which is great the crime rate there is high. I could be wrong. But my mother was able to find a low crime rate with an apt. for 635.oo a month in a beautiful area 3 minutes from the puget sound. A salt water inlet from the ocean, there are many jobs here so have no fear about that. From waitressing to having a masters and being a doctor.
Seattle is coated with a liberal sheen and may appear to be accepting to all, but trust me, it is racists as all hell.

If you are the sort of AA that can tolerate the white is right mentality, then Seattle is for you, otherwise, I'd pick another city a little further south, like Sand Fran or Oakland.

I can't stress how serious I am.
I lived there for 8 years as a kids, went through the public school system back when they used to bus kids from across town to have more racial parity. My middle school was white minority, lets say 40% with Asians making up the majority, blacks the scond largest group (coming out from Rainier beach mostly) and then proably Latinos. So it was a very diverse environment/city...at least at school.

Yes there are blacks all over but the concentration in those out lying communities that for the most part white people dont go to is much higher. And those bused-in kids where much poorer. Many of the social economic problems were visible back then.
Kids who didnt eat breakfast, aggressive behaviour problems, poor hygene (maybe cause their parents were both working too much or not in the picture..)And reading in many cases far behind their grade level. All this put a lot of pressure on the school systems to provide the same education to all groups...predictably more affluent (white) students would gravitate towards private schools or be weeded into 'accelerrated' learning subject programs in more segregated classrooms. White Kids who stayed behind became more ghetto.

I went back there after 15 years to see some friends from school and how they turned out. They said that they dont do busing in anymore but I'm not sure. I didnt go to highschool there.
