Seattle Area: Lynnwood and other suburbs for townhome/home buying? |
Travel Info Ok, so I'm researching the Washington area for a possible relocation next year, and am overwhelmed. I'd continue my work as a software developer-and I know there are a number of companies in Seattle/ Mountlake Terrace area. I was looking north of Seattle to see what kinds of real-estate prices I could find using redfin (great site!) and realtor.com. So-I'm now past the sticker shock of home prices in the area. I was looking at Lynwood-though I'm not finding a lot of new (less than 5 years old) constuction there. I've looked at Bremerton as well, though my concern would be with taking the ferry everyday to work (time/hassle). Obviously I should travel out there to see things for myself-and I am (quite soon in fact). However, I really don't see myself purchasing a $300K+ home. I'd be ok with a townhome if the HOA fees weren't outrageous and the construction new (2000+). Thoughts? Ideas? I don't want to live in the city, but I'd love to live somewhat close to it (30mins). Thanks! Travel Tips So heres my input as a soon to be transplant from WI!!! Prices are high, and even higher in the area you are looking at verses the areas I am looking at. I have been researching Maple Valley, 30 min SE of Seattle, smaller (13,000ish) maybe too small for your liking????or maybe not????? it has a mix of older and newer homes, and townhomes, 300,000 will get you into a a few newer homes (rambler/ranch) 350 for newer and nicer. Townhomes you always seem to get better ammenitites for the money. But 300ish is my budget so I just happen to know that price point. John L Scott's website is a nice one with lots of photos, as well as sea.themlsonline.com this one I use alot. What really attracts me to this area is the school system, although you may not have children, I believe a good school system means a nice community, as well as higher taxes, however I currently live in WI and out taxes are OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! $7,000 a year for assessd value of 300,000!!! So to me taxes in King Co. are cheap, but it sounds like due to some sporting centers taxes will be going up. ?????? According to some locals, maybe someone else will confirm or deny that for us?!?!? Acoding to my reasearch Bremerton may be a nice place to live but maybe not as chic as some of the otherplaces I've read that you have interest in. I dont think you want to commute via ferry, I have heard this is VERY timeconsuming and would it be worth the hassle??? I dont think it would be for me. Peirce Co has better housing prices and ALOT of new construction, My not be as Seattlish as you'd like to be or the commute may not be as short as you may want. At one time found a website and it stated that the average cost of commuting form Port Orchard to Kent(just so. of seattle) was over $300 a month, so as I figure it that would be about a 40 mile commute taking maybe 60-75 min. Add that to the reasonable housing coast and well the reasonable housing is not quite as reasonable as first thought. I relize this is a bit far for you but I was thinking as far a commute times in general. Also, I heard that the crazy realestate market boom is coming down, dropped 11% according to my source in Kent. So we may be better of than we think for th housing market!! I have noticed lots of price reductions lately. Good Luck with your endevors I hope you find the place for you!! Good luck job hunting!! maybe we will see you in WA! Others There are pockets north of Seattle that should have somewhat affordable houses, condos, and townhouses. In addition to Lynnwood, I would look in Shoreline and Edmonds. But like you mentioned, the prices in Seattle are very high so there isn't much. |
