What is the purpose of the buses on cables? |
Travel Info While visiting Seattle, I noticed some buses were attached to cables above the streets, whereas others were not. Does anyone know the reason for this? I have done some research online but haven't found anything about it yet. Travel Tips The buses with overhead cables are electric powered. Generally this propulsion system only is cost effective on short inner city densely populated lines. It is desired through residential areas due to the lack of any engine noise. It is heavily used in Seattle and San Francisco on the west coast and also in Dayton Ohio amongst other urban areas. Overall it is just too restrictive to put in place in most cities and really is not all that cost effective on longer suburban lines especially with the advent of new hybrid diesel electric buses now being heavily produced. Others They are called "troley-bus" due to the "troley" or connecton to the wires. They are electric cars. Good for the enviroment but poses a problem due to the fact that can-not move freely but where the electrical wires are. \http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/trolleybus... Um...I really wanted to say that those buses are bad and can't be trusted to stay on their route...But I can't leave it like that. Those are electric buses. Like a subway car, but not. energy efficiency it saves on gas money from the city, they run on electricity |
