Looking for a town/city in Washington State that perhaps the name was changed?

Travel Info
I have an old book from the early 20's and in the cover it has a mans name and it says/looks like Newburyport or Newburyfront, Wash Jan 1927. Itis the owner of the school book I assume. I haven't found a town named this on a map. Has anyone heard of it? I thought maybe the towns name might have changed over the years. Any ideas?

EDITED with new info.

I located a Eugene Averell in the 1920 census. He was a public school principal, age 53, born in Massachusetts. He also lived in -- you may not believe this -- Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts.

In 1910, at age 44, he was living at 79 School Street, Rockport, Essex, Massachusetts. A high school English teacher, he had been married to Elizabeth H., aged 42, for seven years at the time. It was the first marriage for both, and they had no children.

Searching his name online brings up mention of a Tufts University scholarship given in his name: "The Eugene Averell and Elizabeth Harlow Averell Scholarship, established in 1952 by provision in the will of Eugene Averell of the Class of 1895, the income to be paid annually to a meritorious student."

From the way you described the writing, it seems like it may be faint or messy, and I think that this is too big of a coincidence for it *not* to be the same person. But... you're the one with the book, and if you really think it doesn't say Mass., then I don't know what to think. Source(s): Census records via HeritageQuest

Other Travel Tips
Hope that the best answer was what you needed...but there was and is a town in Washington State named "Newport" it is on the Idaho/Washington border and therewas/is a school there in the 1920's

No town in WA by this name but a Newburyport, Massachusetts
Hundreds of logging towns (camps, really) have disappeared right off the map since the 1920's. These were teeny tiny obscure little places, but with official names and post offices and everything. Can you at least give a county or an area where the town might have been?
