I will be moving to Seattle soon to attend a small graduate school. The school is located at the south end of Lake Union. What is a nice, safe and reasonably priced neighborhood that isn't too far away?

You are asking for two completely different, mutually exclusive things. You can have a nice, safe neighborhood, or you can have a reasonably priced neighborhood. You can not have both.
