Seattleites! What do you love about Seattle?

Travel Info
What would a Californian learn to love in Seattle and it's surrounding areas?

Travel Tips
I'm a native Californian that transplanted myself in the Seattle area. I haven't found the need to "learn" to love anything. You just love it period.

The views are awe inspiring, breathtaking.... kind of like living in the Bay area, but with better mountain backdrops which can often be seen with snow caps.

The streets of Seattle can be steep, again very much like San Francisco. However, they aren't as dirty (i.e. I haven't found the homeless population in Seattle that is evident in San Francisco). The transportation system is more primative than the bay area, but far better than the Los Angeles area has to offer.

If you love concerts, you may be disappointed. They don't have Hollywood in their backyard. And, outdoor activities are severly restricted in half the year because it's too cold. But, the benefits really outweigh these things.

If you're from the Greater Los Angeles area, or the East Bay area, or Sacramento or Fresno, the best thing you'll find when you come to Seattle is the FRESH AIR, the TREES, and it's amazingly GREEN. The closest thing to it for a Californian to relate to are places like Mammoth Lakes, Yosemite, and Big Sir.

As another writer mentioned, the outdoor activities are plentiful. If you like water sports, their is both fresh and sea boating available, fishing, water skiing, jet skiing.... just about everything except for surfing (you'll need to travel a few hours to the Ocean facing beaches for real waves). For land based sports, there are lots of biking and hiking trails, and snow skiing. There are plenty of spectator sports teams to become a fan of. And, more bed and breakfast places than you could visit in a year within a half day's drive.

Seattle is home of a cruise port (just like San Pedro / Long Beach area and San Francisco). It's also near a military operations (e.g. the Navy is across the Sound in Bremerton) kind of like San Diego.

A major difference in Seattle is that small entrepreneurs rule. Little coffee shops are everywhere. But, no matter the business, they seem to do well in Seattle. Rural areas are close to Seattle. And, the prices of land aren't outrageous. Mall space is at a reasonable cost to. So, startup costs for an entrepreneur are reasonable. There is no mistaking the largest two employers in Seattle are Boeing and Microsoft.

Amusement parks aren't nearly as plentiful or built up as in Southern California. You're not going to find the roller coasters of Magic Mountain, or the Fantasies of Disneyland, or the stunts from Universal Studios. You're not going to find a zoo that compares to San Diego Wild Animal Park or associated Zoo. You're not going to find Shamu (except in the wild).

You're also not going to find the traffic you find in the Bay area or Los Angeles. They do have some traffic in Seattle. But, as a Californian, you won't think it's bad at all.

Hope this helps.

I don't live in Seattle anymore, but I did for many years. What I loved was that you could drive in any direction and find beautiful scenery. Mount Rainier is breathtakingly beautiful, Puget Sound is wonderful, Lake Washington is nice. If you're a water person, it's a great place to be. There's lots of cultural things to do, and besides all that.......there's the Space Needle! California doesn't have the Space Needle!.......
You've asked two different, conflicting questions.

I love the weather the most. A Californian will hate the weather here though.
People from California are hated in Seattle.
I love the fact that you so widely different atmospheres are so easily accessible. I came from Cali when I was in grade school and still don't like constant rain or cold weather, but it's more than tolerable for how much I do love Seattle.

Drive two hours east and get to the mountains for great snow, skiing, and snowboarding!

Drive two hours west for the ocean!

Drive two hours north for Vancouver BC which is a fantastic city that I really love (and one of the best Chinatown's that I've ever been to)!

Drive two hours south for Portland which is also a cool town, but don't forget tax-free shopping!

Summers in Seattle are gorgeous and beautiful! If you love the outdoors, Seattle is a great place offering hiking, biking, camping, boating, water all over, and so much for the great outdoors!

There's even one of the world's few temperate rain forests to the northwest, the Hoh Rainforest, which is a wonder! I think New Zealand and one other place have the only other 2, if memory serves...
My Life in Seattle...
i too, am a californian, but comparing this city to california, i like it better here. the weather is good in the winter, and believe me california is extremely hot compared to this.
