Tr y to hit Pikes Market in Seattle if you like that sort of thing.Seattel center around the space needle is pleasant and have many outdoor fairs/celebrations like Bumbershoot I believe on Labor day
I love the Vancouver BC aquarium's beluga whales esp and the surrounding huge Stanley Park. The drive I would not say is "long and boring: though any long drive can get boring.

Into Sept you may be in for some wet cloudy weather so take into account -views of mountains and such are not part of the program on those days which start creeping together more and more as the summer comes to a close-with the sometimes hot day in between...

I'm from the area so I can suggest a few things you might like. On the way up there is a place called Skagit Valley. You can get off there and go out to LaConner. Its a sleepy little artists community right on the water. The San Juan Islands are out that way too. This area is the most beautiful part of the US in my opinion. You have it all, mountain peaks, ocean, islands, huge river valley, rolling hills.
In Seattle proper check out 'seattle tourism' in google, you'll get plenty of choices. Sea plane tours of Seattle are amazing. Or its perfect time of the year to go off on a hike in one of the many forests. Once again, in the Skagit Valley you have the gateway to the north cascade mountain range. Olympic peninsula is off the track but worth the trip. It has the only rainforest in north america.
Enjoy.
You can just do a search online for either of them....

But honestly, that is one LONG BORING DRIVE from Seattle to Vancouver, you'd be better off going to one or the other!!!

Honestly, with the price of gas, just pick one!!
If you are probably anywhere from 35-40 and lower, you may be interested in something you might find in the Seattle Weekly or The Stranger which are both free weekly newspapers that outline much of what is going on in the Seattle area and will have a different take on things from the traditional daily papers (The Seattle Times & The Seattle Post Intelligencer). They outline more of the music, arts, and theatre of the city and surrounding areas and will definitely outline any current attractions, but still check out the local news papers as well.

If you happen to be coming during Labor Day weekend, there's a festival, Bumbershoot, at Seattle Center that hosts many many musicians and artists and is definitely worth checking out. You can see the breakdown of each day in the paper ahead of time and perhaps check out shows that you are interested in for just one or two days and check those out as this isn't a free festival. The price has been varying up and down from almost $20 to I believe it was $14 last year and will be the same this year, if I'm not mistaken.

Don't listen to the person who said the drive was very dismal to BC. It's only a 2 hour drive and along the way you can stop into Muckleshoot where there's a casino and a great outlet mall of actual nice things (!) about 45 minutes north of Seattle. Closer to the border, Bellingham is kind of a fun quirky college town to stop and take a drive through or get a bite to eat if you feel like stopping. It's home to Western Washington University. Then, you're pretty close to the border by that time and won't really find it necessary to stop, probably, hold bathroom breaks and such.

Vancouver is such a great city and I usually always recommend visitors to check it out when they're in the area so I think you'll definitely enjoy yourself up there!
I just have to say the drive to BC from Seattle is not 2 hours, try at least 3 to 4 depending on border traffic. I would suggest taking Amtrak. It's a nice trip to Vancouver, less stress and everyone gets to relax and see the sights. Or if you are going to the San Juans and or Victoria also, try the Victoria Clipper. It's a great way to get around to the islands and it also goes to Vancouver. http://www.clippervacations.com/...
