Travel Tips
There is a Seattle City Pass that allows you to go to 5 attractions for the one time fee of $39.50 for adults and $24 for kids. Attractions included are the Woodland Park Zoo (awesome zoo with lots of cool exhibits), Museum of Flight (neat place with lots of interesting facts about flight and get to go in some neat airplanes), Seattle Aquarium, a 1 hour harbor cruise w/Argosy Cruises (awesome tour with great views of the city), Pacific Science Center w/IMAX pass

Website is http://www.citypass.com/city/seattle.htm...

Also, the Underground tour in pioneer square is a must see

If you only have 2 1/2 days, I'd recommend checking out the Space Needle, but only go up if it's a nice/clear day, otherwise it's kind of crappy, you can't see much. If you have kids, Seattle Center (where the space needle is) has a little amusement park with rides. Pike Street Market is a must-see. The Ballard Locks are cool to see, also taking a Duck Boat ride is always fun, it takes you to all the sights in the city. You can hop on over by the Space Needle. The Pacific Science Center (near Space Needle) is cool, as well as the Children's museum (downtown on 1st Ave.). You can also go to the aquarium and/or take a boat ride of Elliott Bay. If the Mariner's are playing, Safeco is an awesome ballpark! Hope that helps!
My recommendations for that amount of time as follows. This is for adults. I'll give some recommendations for kids below as well:

Pike Place Market
Pioneer Square/Underground Tour
Ferry Ride (Downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island is a good one)
A museum - If any of this interests you:
Seattle Art Museum/Sculpture Museum/Experience Music Project/Museum of Flight/Frye Art Museum
Ballard Locks and Fish Ladder
Somewhere with a view: Smith Tower (historic building, lower view)/Columbia Tower (south end of downtown, tallest building in town), Space Needle (north end of Downtown)

If you have kids, I'd try to squeeze in some of the following depending on their interests and ages:
Children's Museum at Seattle Center
Pacific Science Center at Seattle Center
Odyssey Maritime Museum on the waterfront
Seattle Aqarium on the waterfront
Woodland Park Zoo (if you are from an area that doesn't have a good zoo, this is a good one)
Rent a rowboat and explore lake Union from the Center for Wooden Boats (Lake Union)

Have a great trip! This is a city with lots to see and do, you'll have a hard time fitting it all in.
Here are my top suggestions:

1. Flying fish at the Pike Place Fish stall & Pike Place market

2. Underground Seattle

3. The Ballard Locks and fish ladder.

4. Riding the ferries around Puget Sound

5. Rent a canoe in Washington Park Arboretum.

6. The Space Needle & Seattle Center.

7. Whale watching.

8. The troll under the bridge.
