Driving CA to WA.? |
Travel Info - Should i rent a small 4cilynder car to drive to WA from CA for 230$ a week? (im staying for 4 weeks in WA but using car only for getting there and coming back to CA) or i should rather use my own car and fix it afterwords? - Is hwy 101 good hwy to go to WA from CA or i shoudl use fwy instead? - What are some good places to stop and visit on the way to WA from CA? Travel Tips Rent a car. But turn it in once you get to WA and rent another to drive back. This way, it will save you two weeks on rental charges that you wouldn't be using and put it towards fixing your car. Most major rental companies will let you return the vehicle at a different location. Just make sure they do not charge you a drop charge. If time is not an issue, then go via 101. It is more scenic and there more to do along the way. And don't forget to bring your camera! California: 鈥?Cape Mendocino 鈥?Redwood National Park 鈥?Crescent City Oregon: 鈥?Gold Beach 鈥?Coos Bay 鈥?Tilllamook 鈥?Cannon Beach 鈥?Astoria Have fun! Others If you are only using the car to get there and back, look into two one-way rentals, it may be a slightly higher rate, but you won't have to pay for the time you aren't driving it. Highway 101 is scenic, but can be slower due to terrain or traffic. If you want to get there faster (although it is not the most interesting drive), use I-5. Places to visit depends on where you are coming from. If it is from Southern CA, on highway 101 there is the SF area, the redwoods near Eureka, and the Oregon coast. on I-5 you have Sacramento and Redding in California, Ashland, Eugene, and Portland in Oregon. Sorry it is a bit vague, but what you can see depends on which way you go. Use the I-5 route and make sure to check out the Lake Shasta region for natural beauty, cave tours and recreational opportunities. Take a roadside photo next to the freeway sign for Weed, CA. Maybe tour a lumber or papermill in WA's Willamette Valley. Stand by helplessly as someone else pumps gas into your car anywhere in OR. (Its the law!) Sightsee the historic waterfronts of Columbia and Portland, side-trip to The Dalles in the Columbia River Gorge. Go take a smell of the Peppermint processing factory in WA's Chehalis/Centralia. Drive/fix your own vehicle at your own risk-you've neglected details re: 'and fix it afterwards'. Alternatives are one way only rentals for the travel portion of your stay, if other local transportation's available. Why'd you pay $920 for less than forty hours driving time? Check out other rental companies pricing/options. Drove Bakersfield, CA to Chehalis, WA (right at 1000 miles) in 17 1/2 hours. With two kids, one in diapers, stops for gas and bathrooms only when unrelentingly necessary. If your own car is not dependable I would advise you to rent. Highway 101 is certainly prettier and more majestic. If you have the time (and like seafood dinners), take it. We used to drive from Washington to California when I lived up there, its a pretty nice drive. If you take 101, it'll take a lot longer, but its more scenic since its along the coast. Highway 5 will take you right there and it goes through Redding, Shasta, Eugene, Portland, etc. If your car is going to need fixing from the drive then you should rent one. Have fun! You need a bigger car for the trip. The freeway driving is very competitive and needs a good powerful car. Stop at the Phoenix Grand Hotel in Salem and eat at Bailey's. Take the Mission Street exit off I-5 and turn right on Libert Street and get into far left lane for the undergound parking entrance. |
