thanks for any help

Travel Tips
If you live and work in Seattle proper, then you wouldn't need the use of a car, unless your work requires it. Nix the rental car and use public transportation instead. Buses run frequent and parking in downtown Seattle can be costly (about $250/month).

To explore on the weekends, rent a car. You can easily find a weekend rental for about $50.00 from Hertz or Enterprise.

Or make friends fast and hitch a ride with them when you can!

Good luck!

There is a bus system in Seattle that is OK, but how well it will work for you depends on where you will be staying and where you need to be going for work.

If you can figure public transportation for the commute to and from work, one option to look into is flex car.

www.flexcar.com

After paying for an annual fee, you can reserve and "pay as you go" from their fleet of cars anytime you need one - by the hour or by the day.

So you could use the bus for your daily commute, and reserve a flexcar for any time you wanted to run errands, day trip in the area etc. It would be a much cheaper way to manage than renting a car for 6 months.
If you are going to be living and working in Seattle, you shouldn't have too much problem with Metro (the bus system) getting you where you want to go, assuming you keep "normal" hours. Most of the Seattle area is covered fairly well, although there are some areas that buses get to less frequently or you may have to walk a bit to get to a stop. If you are staying close to the downtown area, it shouldn't be a problem. If you are working and living in the downtown area, the downtown area is considered the "Ride-Free Zone" and within the boundaries of this area (during the day, late at night [I believe after 9-10?] you pay) you don't have to pay the bus fare, so long as the stop you get on at and the stop you exit at fall within the Ride-Free Zone. That's to help eliminate a lot of car traffic in the central downtown area by encouraging hopping on the buses instead. If you are keeping weird hours, you might find buses to be a bit more difficult. Also, on the weekends a lot of routes run less frequently and some not at all.
