the seattle area is very expensive, you are unlikely to find a livable 1 bedroom for $500 a month. the farther north you go the cheaper the apartments are. If you can, try to stay out of king county. My husband is active duty coast guard. my advise would be to look in everett area and use public transportation or get a military roommate. Ask your unit about a sound transit pass. My husband uses the bus and commuter train.
$500 is probably not resonable in Seatle. You may want to consider looking for a house with a room or rent or an apartment with a roommate situation until your finances improve. Does the National Guard have a publication that has classifieds? You may find a roommate with more in common that way.

Good Luck.
I know of one apartment complex that fits the money. You didn't say what size a unit and I'm really not sure what they have. The building is right off 5th & Jackson going toward downtown. I'm not sure but I believe that the building is called the Downtowner. I have a couple of friends that live there.
Try looking around the Seatac area. I lived their years ago, and when we first moved we didn't have a lot of money and rented a small apartment on Military Road South in Seatac. I don't remember the name at this time. I want to say it was in the 16000 block.
