Travel Info Going to seattle next month with 2 teenage kids and a toddler, any suggestion on places to go for family fun?? Travel Tips You didn't say how old your kids were, or if they are old enough to head to one place while you were nearby at another. Seattle Center has a lot of stuff that could interest your family: The EMP (Experience Music Project) is cool for anyone intersted in music. But it won't do anything for your toddler. If you feel comfortable letting your teens go there, a 5 minute walk away are both the Seattle Children's Museum and the Pacific Science Center. Depending on the kid, your teens might enjoy the science center - they have IMAX movies, and lots of cool, hands on exhibits. They have a fantastic tots area as well - better in my opinion than what you'll find at the Children's Museum for a toddler. Bring your swimsuits, and if the weather is nice all can frolic in the International Fountain, also at Seattle Center. The fountain is accompanied by music, and kids of all ages will have fun there. You'll want to wander Pike Place Market - lots to look at, but if possible go on a weekday or ealy in the morning if you are planning on having your toddler in the stroller - it can get crowded and difficult to move around. Depending on what your kids are into, other possibilities include: Renting a rowboat at the Center for Wooden Boats (Lake Union) or canoes at the UW boat house (Lake Washington) Riding the Ducks tour of Seattle - hokey, but a fun way to see the sights and get out on the water. Take a Ferry Ride to Bainbridge Island. Plan to get off in Bainbridge and walk to town (not far) for an icecream or cup of coffee. The Ballard Locks and fish ladder - It's fun to watch the boats go up and down, and watch the salmon climb the fish ladder. Get some Fish and Chips from Totem house across the street from the locks and take them into the park for a picnic. The Woodland Park Zoo is a good one if you are from an area lacking a good Zoo. They have a great indoor play area for tots that is fairly new. The Aquarium is newly revamped. Just a couple of piers down from the Aquarium is the Discovery Maritime Museum - a look at Seattle's connection to Eliott Bay, Puget Sound and the Ocean. It's hands on - virtual kayak of the bay, try to load containers into a virtual container ship, learn about the fishing industry based here etc. The Museum of Flight (South of Seattle) is neat - tour an old Air Force 1 and a Concorde, lots of airplanes on display to see. Not much for the toddler specifically, but there is lots to look at and a small tots area to play in. The Everett Future of Flight Museum is also OK - tours of the Boeing Plant require all to be 4 feet tall, so someone would have to stay behind in the exhibit area with the toddler. The Space Needle does have a great view, but it's expensive - don't bother if the weather is bad. The Underground tour is interesting. Lots of stairs, so a stroller wouldn't work here. And the last time I took the tour, it had lots of references to the working girls of early Seattle - so make sure you are OK with that for your teens. Have a great trip! The weather ought to be great! Others Go over to Canada on the ferry. The park that the Space Needle is a part of would be great...it's got amusements as well as a monorail that will take you out of the park and into an elaborate shopping mall. Yeah, skip the whole Seattle scene, book a flight to L.A. , take the bratts to Disneyland for a day and get it out of the way. Come back home, drop the kids off at day care and go out with the girls and spend all your money on booze and cigarettes. |
