How would you compare Seattle versus Portland? |
Travel Info How would you compare Seattle versus Portland? Travel Tips I thought I might add to the first answerer's answer, a bit. I'm not a big shopper; but when comparing Seattle and Portland you have to bear in mind that Portland--as well as the rest of Oregon--does NOT have a sales tax; Seattle does. Coupled with the fact that as a rule, things are more expensive in big cities anyway... you're going to find better deals and savings in Portland, even if only because of the lack of a sales tax. Another thing to point out--Seattle might be full of educated people; but that's because of the jobs in the Seattle area attracting educated people from other places in the country, and because of the Seattleites who have taken it upon themselves to be better-educated. The public school system in Washington is AWFUL. I don't know about Oregon's school system so I won't comment on it; but from my own experience and from the experiences of my wife, who is a teacher with overseas and domestic teaching experience, Washington has by far one of the worst, and lowest-scoring, public school systems in the country. Teachers are underpaid, curricula are watered down, and the standardized testing is a joke--which is not helped by the people who think that standardized testing somehow hurts the kids' "self esteem" and shouldn't be held accountable to achieve anything. The schools were a joke when I was a kid attending them, and they've only gotten worse since then. The fact that there are so many well-read and educated people in the Seattle area is NOT attributable to the public school system. Source(s): Born and raised in the Seattle area, but have lived in quite a few places... currently living here again Other Travel Tips I've lived in both so I guess I'm somewhat qualified to give a fair comparison. Education- Seattle has a far more educated population than Portland which tends to have a lot of poorly-educated people. 1 vote for Seattle. Beauty and Scenery- Seattle wins this one easily. But no city in the US could beat Seattle in this catagory. 1 vote for Seattle Quality of schools- Seattle wins this because it is known as the most educated city in the country. 1 vote for Seattle Employment Opportunities- Seattle easily wins here with the high concentration of great paying jobs. the high tech industry is everywhere and Boeing is in the middle of a big win streak. 1 vote for Seattle Housing costs- Portland wins here due to their lower prices. If you can afford Seattle though, you would probably be better off there because when you sell you will realize a larger profit. 1 vote for Portland Entertainment- Easy win for Seattle. All the top names put Seattle on their schedules. Not so for Portland. 1 vote for Seattle Sports- 1 vote for Seattle (no explanation required here) Weather- 1 vote for Portland (just because its a little warmer) Crime- Seattle is a far safer city 1 vote for Seattle Shopping- Seattle has a huge variety of locations 1 vote for Seattle Transportation- Tough one because of traffic headaches in Seattle, but overall Seattle gets the nod here. 1 vote for Seattle Overall Friendly City- Seattle easily here Pretty much of a landslide for Seattle as I see it. Portland is just another city on a river, really two rivers. Seattle is a city between a lake and a bay with an incredible view of mountains on both sides, and also a river. Portland has better public transportation, and 3 or 4 light rail lines, Seattle is still working on that. Seattle has a view of Mt. Rainier, Portland has Mt. Hood. Seattle wins for awful architecture, the new Downtown Public Library, and also the Experience Music Project/Museum of Science Fiction. Both are horrid in different ways. Seattle has been the setting for many TV shows and movies, while I'm not aware of any for Portland. |
