Tell me about living in Sheffield?

I want to come and live in Sheffield for one year. What's the poulation there? Can I get affordable country accomodation within 1/2 travel to the Uni of Sheffield? Does it actually snow there?? I am from Australia. Is it a safe and friendly city?

Hi, I'm from Sheff, so I'll have a crack at this one.

The population was 520,700 in 2005.

It does snow in Sheffield, usually from around January to early March but the severity of our winters are impossible to predict. Some years we have just a few days of very light snow, other years we can have a few weeks of traffic-stopping 12-inchers. The city center usually escapes the worst of it, but even the slightest amount of snow can bring the city to it's knees. We're a friendly lot generally, and like most cities, you'll find areas of high contrast. We have some pretty cosmopolitan areas - the student haunts are actually very pleasant. Students are advised not to wear their Sheffield Uni scarves whilst touring the city as it's resulted in muggings, I'm ashamed to say. Other areas of the city center are horribly run down. Like most other cities, we have our drug users and vagrants. The southwest quarter of the city is the more affluent, and the west more affluent than the east.
