National University of Singapore (how is it)? |
Travel Info I'm a Canadian citizen currently enrolled in pre-dent in Cebu Philippines. I hate absolutely everything about this damn country and I want to try and transfer to NUS for Dentistry. How is NUS? The university I'm in here, is #1 for dentistry in the Philippines, BUT the damn university doesn't even have air conditioning, and the faculty is so damn rude it's driving me crazy. I'm not getting emails back from the dentistry department, so I was wondering if anyone can tell me a little about the school. I am planning a trip which has a stop over in Singapore, so I was hoping to cab it out to the school and check it out for myself. is it far from the airport? Travel Tips Taking a cab will need at least S$20. I can't remember exactly, but I think it's probably around S$24. NUS is a great school. I just graduated from there, and having been on an exchange program to the UPenn before, I find the facilities in both universities comparable. Anyway, dentistry is a very small faculty. The intake each year is only 34 students, so it's one of the most difficult faculty to enter. I think they're planning to increase a little, but since it's limited by the space & workstation they have, I don't think they're able to take in a lot of students. Another thing you'll need to take that into consideration if you intend to transfer is that all the dentistry students are bonded to the Singpapore government for a couple of years after graduation. 2yrs if I'm remember correctly. Others National University of Singapore is one of the best universities in Singapore. It has modern facilities and has been ranked amongst the World's Top 20 and Top 3 universities in Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2006 conducted by the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES). In this annual ranking of the top 200 universities worldwide, NUS shared 2nd place in Asia and 19th spot overall with University of Tokyo. I remembered in Asiaweek's 2000 edition, NUS is #5 overall best in Asiaweek's best school ranking in Asia Pacific with University of the Phils as #48. The one way to know if their graduates are good is thru the services of the dentists itself. They are very professional , competent and practices proper hygiene. Their skills are much sought for not only in Singapore but other countries as well. Although NUS is excellent in providing dentistry programme, they are very selective of their prospective students. To enter one of the best schools, you have to possess excellent credentials. Places for this school is limited just like the quota provided in University of Phils Diliman. You can plan a trip here and stroll around the campus. The distance from the airport is very far. NUS is located at 10 Kent Ridge Crescent Singapore 119260 Website: www.nus.edu.sg The National University of Singapore is Singapore's oldest university. It is the largest university in the country in terms of student enrolment and curriculum offered. The university's main campus is located in southwest Singapore at Kent Ridge, with an area of approximately 150 hectares. The Bukit Timah campus houses its law faculty, while the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore is located at Outram campus. NUS has a semester-based modular system for conducting courses. It adopts features of the British system, such as small group teaching (tutorials) and the American system (credits). Students may transfer between courses within their first two semesters, enrol in cross-faculty modules or take up electives from different faculties. Other cross-disciplinary initiatives study programmes include double-degree undergraduate degrees in Arts & Social Sciences and Engineering; Arts & Social Sciences and Law; Business and Engineering; and Business and Law. NUS offers 27 single-degree undergraduate and 115 masters, doctoral and graduate diploma programmes conducted by 13 faculties. The above answers have pretty much summarized the university and its standards. Just wanted to answer the final question, yes it's very far from the airport. There are a few ways to get here: 1. MRT You can take the MRT from Changi Airport Station all the way to a) Buona Vista Station then change to bus service route 95. b) Clementi Station then change to bus service route 96. If you are interested to visit our medical faculty, choice (a) will be easier for you. Just ask around the MRT stations and someone will be able to guide you. 2. Cab If you want to take a cab to NUS, it's quite a long journey, I would say about 30 to 45min. Probably cost about $15 to $20 at a non-peak time. Not very sure though I've never taken the cab so far! You can always check out the university website for more information: www. nus.edu.sg Topflight institution with a superb learning environment. From where you are it's like going to the 1st world. NUS is far from Changi airport but the excellent transportation in the island city is as good as they come. Check out also the Duke-NUS Medical Graduate School and the Faculty of Dentistry. websites:www.gms.edu.sg/ - 9k www.dentistry.nus.edu.sg/ - 42k good good |
