I will be in Johannesburg for three nights. Should I stay by the airport or downtown? |
Travel Info The tour operator I'm working with has recommended an airport hotel because she said the downtown hotels are very expensive but I want to experience as much as the city as I can. Will I feel out of the loop if I stay by the airport? Also, I am a female in my 20's traveling alone. Is it safer in the suburbs? Travel Tips Stay out of Jo'burg 'town' - unless you're travelling in a group and you know your way around. The airport is near Boksburg, so if you get itchy feet, you can explore the mall there. It's safe. If you want a personal guided tour, e-mail me your dates that you'll be here. I might be available to show you around. (I live near Johannesburg International Airport / O R Tambo - and I'm in Boksburg most weekends.) EDIT: Peppa-Ann, that word is a derogatory term for Hispanics in the States. It's as much a swearword there as the K word is here. EDIT: Peppa-Ann - lose the chip, ok? I was only trying to help. Yahoo Answers is run by americans, and therefore won't allow words THEY consider to be swearwords. The K word, however IS allowed to be typed - because the yanks don't know it's a swear word. Do you get it now? I doubt the powers that be at Yahoo Answers care how many Hispanic people you know. And for the record, I'm a South African LIVING IN South Africa. Ok? Ok. Others Define downtown (I have images of Hillbrow, NOT a good idea). Leave the city alone unless you've done it before and are exoerienced in terms of the crime ((images of a bus hijacking or masses of tourists getting mugged come to mind). Suburbs are far safer. Rather wait until there is less crime in SA before going wandering, rather live to tell the tale. Dear Katie*** There is nothing wrong with the City Lodges in Sandton area. It is not that expensive. You will be close to Sandton Mall, and all amenities. City Lodges have guided tours etc. and are always ready to help!! The Lodges are kept *s*p*i*c* (is this a swear word!!!!!)? and span and the staff are extremely helpful. Just bring your winter woollies. It is veeeeeeeeeeeery cold. When you are shopping do not walk around with gold dripping off your body. Leave that at home, and shop with an american express card. You will be fine!! Luv peppa-ann p.s. is *s*p*i*c* a swear word????when I type **** they block it out!!!???? Hi vix!!! the spelling of words in your country is not the same in South Africa!!!! we spell it as I did. Never knew this was an English help-line section!!?? I happen to be a lecturer who has definately scored "big" when it comes to the English language. But obviously the yahoo answers team needs some lessons!!? dWali*** Thank you, can see you are definately South African. I have never known such catty people in my life. That is the difference between our countries. You don't get this petty, catty"ness" here!!!! Never knew that about s 'n s??! Angelpaw***This is a South African section, and I do not even know Hispanic people. In our country it is definately NOT a swear word. South African no "****" is not a swear word (unless its one in another language) but I would spell it "spick" Stay in the airport hotel, when you have a longer visit you can arrage a proper tour of the city. Buy some good tourist books and souveneurs at the airport shops, settle down with a big cup of coffee and a nice room service meal and indulge in your books. You'll be safe and enjoy some of the culture. THERE IS NOTHING AT THE AIRPORT - You will go nuts of boredom. Stay away from Hillbrow, but definitely try to get into Johannesburg. Mobility might be a problem, our public transport is bad. Sandton is very safe, fairly pricey and nice to stay. In South Africa we use the tem S*p*i*c and span to indicate VERY clean. In USA it is used as times in derogatory fashion for hispanic persons |
