Why are South Africans so americanized??? |
Travel Info this is just my view. I've been to SA and it's a great country and i think Cape Town could be one of the most beautiful cities in the world but alot of south africans are very americanized (if that is a word) and especially the teenagers. By the way they dress and behave. Travel Tips True what you say. American television gets dished up so much in SA that it must have a huge impact. The sad part is, if you ask the average US citizen how much they know about SA the don't have a clue. I would bet you that the average South African youngster knows more about the States than the Americans do. Real pity. There is such a rich cultural heritage that is being overlooked. With such ethnic variety, South Africa should start showing up on the global map as a force of its own.Thank you for your observation. lol Others it happens in every country. America is where we get our TV shows from. It's a big influence on everyone, especially teenagers. Heck even other countries as well. (Cuba and Japan being big American fundies!) I guess the American Lifestyle just has something about it that appeals to others as well? Firstly, thank you for visiting South Africa. Hope you鈥檒l come back again. I am not sure whether you had been to Cape Town only. The first part of my answer assumes that being the case. Cape Town population is not even a quarter of South African population. So, that cannot be used to sample South African dress and behaviour. On the other hand, maybe you should have tried to find out about South African dress 鈥渟tyle鈥? You would have been surprised to find many correct answers 鈥?some of which would perfectly fit the 鈥淎merican dress鈥? Europeans influence in South Africa started in the 1600s. That influence included dress and behaviour. From what I know, there are similarities between Europe and Americas. It therefore means that there would be similarities between Americas and South Africa. While it might be true that some aspects of American dress and behaviour have been copied I beg to differ that we are 鈥渧ery Americanized鈥?or 鈥渟o Americanized鈥? I also concede that it would be very difficult to import dress style and behaviour direct from South Africa to America, but that is not impossible. So, you might find that some of the things that are believed to be 鈥渟o American鈥?are in fact 鈥渟o South African鈥? just because we dress nicely we are now americanized? Do you expect us to run around in animal skins and throw spears ? Teenagers are always going to follow fashions and trends and normally rebel - so they cant be used as a measuring stick to judge the country as a whole. Im sorry but I think you are wrong. To a degree it's true, but it's like that with every country. If you'd like to see Americanised, check places like Singapore, it's far more Americanised, speaking American English, activities are more like America than elsewhere. Square dancing, dress, speaking, attitudes, etc. Yes, in Translation we call it "McDonaldisation". It's because most of our moveis, games and outside influences have been from america since I can remember. You can see it in our young girls too: anorexia and bulemia terrorises the females because of the image we get of the "perfect" body. We really have the potential to be just as good as anyone with visual arts, if only people would see that... |
