Do you believe the 1992 referendum was rigged by the National Party and F.W. De Klerk? |
Travel Info Is it even remotely possible that the "Yes" vote could garner a 68% majority support at a time when the National Party would have lost a National General Election to the Conservative Party had one been called? Is it possible that right wing strong holds such as Pietersburg as an example were won by De Klerk? Did F.W. De Klerk order the manipulation of ballot counting after his already deceitful lies that he would negotiate on the basis of "power sharing"? Has history ever seen a greater liar or snake than the repulsive jackal De Klerk? What are your thoughts on this matter? I realise it is water under the bridge but feel that praise should not be bestowed upon a man of such criminal nature. PS - I know I've lost the Friday challenge. Travel Tips I read something on thiss not so long ago and I will see if I can find you the link. From memory the issues that brought about the downfall of apartheid were economic sanctions, the sudden escalation in the Oil price and the threat to boycott South African gold in favour of purchases from Russia and Australia. The threats were made by the US/UK and De Klerk was tld in no uncertaain terms that failing all that he faced a military option. What was even more interesting was that Mandela was not the US first choice as the new Leader - it was Buthelezi which sent the ANC apoplectic. Against that background De Klerk faced little choice and further there was a growing change of opinion from White South Africans about apartheid and a tiredness of being regarded as the polecats of the World. De Klerk made all kinds of promises to the electorate and desperate to get acceptance Worldwide they bought into it in a new sense of euphoria.Whether the referendum was rigged or not is an open question but it may well have been had he not got the mandate. The Conservative Party was not a viable option for South Africans for the US/UK would have collapsed the Economy double quick and funded even more terrorist attacks had that failed. Undoubtedly De Klerk did let South Africans down big time after the release of Mandela and the 1994 elections by not taking advantage of the full time frame for power sharing and the ultimate capitulation of the Nationalist Party. He made sure he and a few others were OK but unlike the scum such as Pik Botha he did not make the ultimate volte face by joining the ANC. Others S African political leadership was strong armed into change because of the impresssions of inhumane, immoral treament and the publicity about the history of crime by Afrikaner leadership. Follow the money. PARTY POOPER ! (At least a good question !) Hello this is MR Cash The referendum was obviously rigged in 1992! I know of people with moderate political views who voted NO De klerk let us down big time, not because blacks are running the country but because the ANC managed to outwit and out-negotiate the Nats I think De klerk thought he would come out of this whole thing smelling like roses but he ended up being a traitor to his people and the ANC terrorists probably couldnt believe their luck at how easily the Nats folded! Alf made an interesting point about USA wanting Buthelezi as the new leader He in my view would have been an excellent choice. He wanted more of a federal system here which I think could have worked! Interesting topic Bull, we can bash it out at the braai tomorrow!! good question ... liked alfs answer ... makes a lot of sense. I think PW was ok ... better than he leaders of the past. It was rigged and saved a bloodbath in S Africa. It was a way out offered for the boys. I thought you were really serious until I saw your reference tio a well-known website for conspiracy theories. Less cheese and coffee late at night for you my dear. I think you should let it go already, if it was rigged, I really don't think it was, since I don't know of one person who voted NO. |
