Boer War facts....South Africa? |
Travel Info It is with a wry grin I notice how the Afrikaners are beginning to use the Boer War as some kind of justification for all of their "volkslede" en "getreur". 27000 Boer women and children died of disease and starvation in the camps, a terrible thing indeed but nearly 20000 Africans died as well along with "coloured" servants of the boers, no monument to them. The British did not deliberately seek out to eradicate the Afrikaner people as the Germans did nor did they have a policy of persecution that in any way shape or form compares to Hitler's. It was a Boer himself who suggested the use of detainment camps to the British to combat guerilla warfare. If we look further back, The British abolished slavery and so the Boers trekked out of the Cape. The Boer Republics were slave states in all but name using the infamous "book system" of forced labour on blacks. The Boer Republics' politics destabilised the entire region and provoked aggression with the Matabele, BoPedi and Zulus.
